‘Am Playing A Khatarnaak Villain In ‘Saaho’ And An Arab In A Marathi Movie’: Chunky Pandey

Chaitanya Padukone

Popular Bollywood lead hero Chunky Pandey, who has shifted gears taking up dark, villainous roles are thrilled with the “super-response” to the unveiling of his latest antagonist yet stylish cigar-smoking character Devraj in the Prabhas-Shraddha Kapoor blockbuster bilingual starrer ‘Saaho’. “Although, it’s stopped raining locally, I have been ‘showered’ with compliments from all my startled filmy friends. My own actress-daughter Ananya was pleasantly shocked to check out my get-up in grisly ‘Saaho’, as she was not aware until yesterday as to what I was discreetly up to,” chuckles Chunky who seems excited that he shared screen-space with Southside heart-throb mega-star Prabhas ( who played the iconic ‘Baahubali’).

Apparently, in ‘Saaho’ there is this scene where Prabhas is literally ‘kneeling’ as he addresses Chunky’s devilish character. “ That was a huge high for me, but Prabhas’ fans would want to kill me on screen, as I am the Prince of Diabolic Darkness,”  guffaws Pandey who is also delighted that first time in his career he was also shooting for a Telugu version ( of ‘Saaho’) as well. “Since I didn’t know the Telugu language, my expressions are more impactful,  in the regional version,”he shrugs. Two years ago, in the Vidya Balan-starrer period movie, ‘Begum Jaan’, Chunky had played a  wicked rural villain Kabir sporting a bizarre get-up. “ Of course I will ensure I do not get stereotyped and also play wacko comic characters like the popular ‘Aakhri Paasta’. In fact I am doing a Marathi film called ‘Bangarwalla’  directed by (Poshter Boyz) director Sameer Patil. Where I am playing an Arab foreigner character   When they came and narrated it to me I realized it had such a great message – what one needs to do in today’s life. I said I have to do this film. I have been offered many Marathi films earlier but this one I just grabbed it. It’s got a very strong social message and it has fun elements,” discloses Suyas ( that’s Chunky’s real name) as he signs off .
