At the very outset, I should confess frankly that after a long time, I stumbled across a film which is indeed a worthy addition to the raft of adventurous, sure-handed genre-benders that the Mumbai movie industry has been delivering of late, with accent on content that is out of the box and thought provoking enough o challenge social norms and thinking. The best thing about this slice-of-life film is its storytelling, which is appreciably enhanced by solid performances from a wonderful cast, and is marked by control and sensitivity.

The film revolves around a middle-aged couple Priyamvada Kaushik (Neena Gupta) and Jeetender Kaushik (Gajraj Rao), who get unexpectedly pregnant. The couple from a middle-class family is constantly made to feel conscious and shameful about the pregnancy, and even end up being a talking point in their social circles. Even their sons Nakul (Ayushmann Khurrana) and Gullar (Shardul Rana) grapple to cope with the situation that they are in, because they believe that though it is okay for youngsters to indulge in sex, it is only yuck for the elders and they must at all costs desist from it.

Whether it is Neena Gupta or Gajraj Rao or for that matter Surekha Sikri, it is very tough to single out who is better than whom. Ayushmann Khurana is good as usual but Sanya Malhotra has been wasted in an in an inane role especially after Dangal and Pataakha. The film, much like its subject, puts a fantastic new spin on the usual. In a new-age rom-com, like this, you go to the theater with expectations that Ayushmann and Sanya’s love story will take centre stage, but it is exhilarating when you see the middle-aged parents blush with romance and you are mesmerized by a screenplay that has absolutely no dull moment at all.

It is to sum up, an outstanding effort and you just cannot believe that the same director had churned out a turnip like Tevar three years ago.
