Dhappa is a film which children will like immensely though it tackles a very mature subject of intolerance and political mishandling and bungling of social activities. Set in the backdrop of Pune, it revolves around Anuradha who is busy directing a play for children for Ganesh Festival in her hous8ing society. The play sets out to highlights the issues of environment with the poignant message s of Jesus Christ and Sant Tukaram imbibed in them. When the children are enjoying the rehearsals it is all of a sudden disrupted by a political group which threatens everyone with dire consequences if the play is staged because they feel that Jesus Christ cannot be a part of a play which is staged during Ganesh Utsav.

The elders in the society relent but the poor children are left confused as they rightfully do not find anything offensive in the platy especially since in the school they are always taught about how there exists unity in diversity in India. Confused by the dichotomy, the kids try asking the elders in the society but are baffled when they find no acceptable answers. The film is about how the children eventually take matters in their own hands, find their own answers through their play and teach a lesson to the political scoundrels who try to sabotage their play insensitively.Whether it is Akash Kamble, Sharavi Kulkarni, Akshay Yadav or for that matter Vrushali Kulkarni or Shrikant Yadav, each and every ac tor lives his role effortlessly lending a touch of authenticity to the proceedings of the film.

The best thing about the film that had won the Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration at the 65th National Film Awards, is that the director Nipun Dharmadhikari who had earlier come up with the heartwarming family social Baapjanma though Dhappa is his first film which has seen the light of the day only now, sets out to turn a simple event into a socio political comment about the current society where intolerance has become the way of life and perhaps the norm , especially of political parties. Mention must be made of the right dialogues capturing the absurdity of current politics that use religion as a tool to threaten.  To sum up, definitely, the film is a onetime watch!
