Entertaining Horror

Vicky (Rajkummar Rao), who is a small time tailor in a quaint village called Chandri  falls in love with a mysterious girl (Shraddha Kapoor) who appears strangely enough only during the four days of the festive season as well. Her disappearing act gets his friends suspicious and they start believing that she could be the female spirit known as Stree haunting the city for long. Before they could come to any tangible conclusion, one by one they disappear.

Though the film which has a refreshingly different premise to begin with starts on a promising note, half way through, it drops the horror comedy treatment and unfortunately becomes a tad too serious about the conventional stabbing-the-ghost-in-the-heart kind of ideas that often play out in horror flicks and starts beating round the bush. It is quite strange and funny that a film that sets out to poke fun at horror film ideas and entertains the audience with its quips, suddenly bursts out into a comment on feminism and in a bid to be socially relevant, Stree ends up being a little too preachy for comfort.

Despite all its flaws and ambiguous ideas, I’d still rate Stree is still as an entertaining film. This is an experimental comedy that creates an eerie atmosphere and yet manages to be funny and scary at the same time. While Rajkummar Rao is first rate as an actor, Shraddha lends credence to an unusual role with ease. It is Pankaj Tripathy who steals the show with his uncanny sense of comedy timing. Thanks to the deft directing by Amar Kaushik and producers Raj and DK (of Go Goa Gone, 99 and Shor In The City fame) who bring in their trademark humor, you are able to sit through this film without squirming at the wrong places.
