Dhanush steals the show as the extra ordinary Fakir

Jyothi Venkatesh

This film is based on an action-adventure cum fantasy novel by Romain Puertolas marks Dhanush’s debut in Bollywood after he made his debut in Bollywood with Ranjhana and reining the South Indian film industry. After his mother's (Amruta Sant) death, a street artist from Mumbai, Ajatashatru or Aja (Dhanush), leaves India for France to track down the father he never knew, because it has been his mother’s dream. From the moment he arrives in Paris, after his mother passes away rustling up a flight ticket and a passport with a fake 100 Euro note, nothing goes as planned and an array of bizarre incidents.

Aja falls in love with a young American woman (Erin Moriarty) having an existential crisis, wakes up in a truck full of Somalian refugees headed for England, is held hostage in a bureaucratic war, sorts out the love life of a movie actress (Berenice Bejo), gets shot at by a hit man in a Roman palace, travels by private jet, merchant ship and hot-air balloon, and becomes a rich man temporarily for a brief span of a few hours. As Aja finds himself helplessly shipped from Folkestone to Barcelona, and from Rome to Tripoli, what was initially supposed to be a simple visit to Paris to discover his father's identity turns into a veritable odyssey of its own.

The film is essentially about the travels of Ajatashatru and his fans are bound to fall for their favorite actor in the garb of a Fakir. In a sterling and excellent performance, an expressive Dhanush in multiple avatars steal the show and is the heart and soul of the delightful film with his easy charm and winning smile, whereas Amruta Sant justifies her role fully though her role is very small. The rest of the star cast whether it is Erin Moriarty, Berenice Bejo or for that matter Barkhad Abdi are okay while it is Hearty Singh as the child Aja who makes you want to see more of him. It is the quick paced direction by Ken Scott coupled with sincerity-loaded performance of Dhanush, who seems to have extraordinary powers to please his fans even when he is doing nothing special that save the otherwise formula ridden film.
