The film’s primary plot revolves around a band of thugs led by Amitabh Bachchan’s character Khudabaksh whose motive is to gain freedom for India from the British Raj. After the British company’s officer Clive (Lloyd Owen) takes over the kingdom of King Mirza (Ronit Roy), princess Zafira (Fatima Sana Shaikh) and Khudabaksh aka Azaad form a band of rebel pirates who swear to defeat the English officer and win their freedom back. The British Company now hires the wily two timing thug Firangi (Aamir Khan) to track Azaad’s gang and thwart his plans.

As far as the screenplay is concerned, it is a big no no since from the start to the end it is very predictable though the dialogues are fiery. It is one film which proves that no matter how glossy a film is and how unique it might seem in the Indian context, there can be no substitute for an intelligent script and enterprising direction. Music score by Ajay and Atul is hardly hummable and do not befit the grandeur of a film like this. The less said about editing, the better as the film runs into almost three hours whereas it could have been trimmed by half an hour

Aamir Khan complete with kohl-lined eyes, ear rings and a nose pin, is the scene stealer of every scene of which he is a part of while Amitabh Bachchan plays a dyed-in-the-wool patriot who galvanizes his own people against a tyrannical British officer named Clive (Lloyd Owen), in his own inimitable style. In an extended cameo of a dancing girl Suraiya, Katrina delights you with her curves and moves though acting –wise she has hardly any scope. Fatima Sana Shaikh plays a princess who doesn’t have even a single dialogue for the first hour, but is noticeable. Ila Arun plays a medicine woman, while Mohammad Zeeshan Ayub, who plays Khan’s man Friday, shines in his lisping role.

To sum up, the film, which is a predictable fantasy, reminds you in parts of Kranti and Pirates of Caribbean
