“Nasiruddin Shah Is My Mentor And Friend For Lifetime”, Says Jameel Khan

Jameel Khan hails from a place called Bhadohi in Uttar Pradesh and his journey to city of dreams has been in an interesting one. Speaking about that Jameel shares, "I started doing theatre right from my school days. I studied in a school called Sherwood college in Nainital and that's where my interest in acting developed. Actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Kabir Bedi are from the same school. I was  the winner of the best actor award from Sherwood. So after winning the award I did my college and continued doing theatre. I shifted to Mumbai also to pursue theatre. Luckily I got associated with Nasiruddin Shah and started working with him in his theatre company.  I haven't been to any acting school but if there has been any learning it has been this. So I learnt a lot there while doing theatre in Mumbai. Over a period of time I realized that it will be difficult to survive in Mumbai by working in theatre so I started doing voice overs and dubbing. People who saw me in theatre picked me up from there and that's how I started getting roles. I never got a portfolio clicked and  went in search of work. So people saw my plays and by word of mouth I started getting work. The first ad that I did was for Asian Paints which was my claim to fame. It bought me a lot of recognition. That's how films started happening. Theatre got me the basic break into films.” Speaking about his mentor Nasiruddin Shah, Jameel has all good things to say, ”Nasiruddin Shah is my mentor and my friend for lifetime. One can learn so many things from him. My association with him is for 20 years now. Whenever I tell him that he is my Guru he always smiles. It is a privilege for me to have shared stage with such a genius.” Jameel and Shah worked in plays like Manto...Ismat Haazir Hain, Katha Collage, Safed Jhoot Kaali Salwar, The Caine Mutiny Court Marshal, Faust, The Chairs.
