There are reasons to rejoice. You can now watch regional films on Netflix without it pinching your wallet. With an aim to expand its subscriber base in India, the video streaming giant Netflix is experimenting with the low-cost mobile-only subscription at Rs 250 per month with select users. This is half of the Rs 500 that the streaming platform charges for its base subscription pack. According to Television Post, the Internet TV network is experimenting with lower pricing models in India in order to broaden its appeal among Indian consumers. Netflix chief product officer Greg Peters noted that mobile-only plan is a great example of something that the company is trying out.“We’re not positive that’s the right model, but we’re quite certain that we should do something to find a price tier that’s lower than the existing lowest price tier to broaden that accessibility. We think that they’ll be important to adding members in India.”

He singled out a partnership with Airtel, which he said is working quite well. “We were super encouraged out of the gate with Love Per Square Foot and Sacred Games, where not only do we get a lot of viewing in India but it just took an incredible position in the zeitgeist where people were talking about and writing about the excitement of a show of the quality of Sacred Games. Recently we followed it up again with Delhi Crime that people also really love it in India and is getting watched outside of India as well,” he stated. He also said that the investment in local content is helping Netflix to grow the membership base as well as consumption of content. “And most importantly, the steady drumbeat and then add to that another dozen original films coming in India that we’re seeing the investment in local language content in India payback in the form of excitement and member growth and hours growth that’s encouraging us to keep going.”
