Republic day is a reminder that the freedom we have today is because of the sacrifices that are involved in it and it gives me a lot of pride to be an Indian. In our daily lives we are very busy to be thankful for living in an independent country, and this day is a reminder for that. Hence, it has always been an important day in my family as my parents made sure that we, as kids, watch the republic day parade and we used to enjoy it a lot. We would get ready early morning to watch the flag hoisting, the parade and listen to the speeches on Doordarshan making sure we never missed it. So, I try to make my kids watch it now but unfortunately it’s no more a ritual. However, we have flag hoisting in our building for which I take my daughters and also encourage them to speak about the country. I believe that as of now they won’t understand the feeling as its just words for them but making them aware is important because when they grow up, they will realise the power of being born in a free country like India

This is one day when the entire family has a holiday and we make sure to spend time together.

We don’t usually shoot on Republic day so it’s a day off. However, my idea of Republic Day is “Enjoy the freedom with responsibility.” I believe that if each one of us take baby steps of being aware and give a little hand in little things, this country will be a better place to live in. For example, it will be better if everyone carries a little bag for garbage rather than littering and I try spreading this word to everyone. Also, I am very particular about queuing and don’t like if someone doesn’t respect people standing in a queue. These are some little things that everyone should be aware of in order to be a responsible citizen of this country.

I stayed in the cantonment area during my childhood. On Republic day, we had flag hoisting in school followed by march-past and refreshments for all the children. So, every school would celebrate Republic Day for 3-4 hours and we used to enjoy that time a lot as there were no studies and only fun. My only message for everyone is not to divide ourselves on any bases, rather live with unity, and enjoy life.

Republic day reminds me of my school days. Early morning patriotic songs playing in the neighborhood, wearing white clothes and taking flowers to school specially to put under the flag pole. We used to participate in a lot of activities, specially dancing and singing, to be performed in front of the chief guest. It was all so much fun and I used to look forward to Republic day

I guess, the more we get entangled in the struggle of our daily lives, we tend to forget the significance of such patriotic festival which, according to me, is not a nice thing. I wish we could hoist flag on our sets as well and celebrate Republic Day with the entire unit, just like school days.

26th January is a special day for all Indians as on this day in 1950, India adopted its new constitution and became the Republic of India. When we were in school, this day meant watching the traditional parade at Rajpath on TV, hearing inspiring and moving speeches and of course distributing sweets. Now, when we are celebrating our 69th Republic Day this year, I hope I am able to make my children feel the same pride and joy that I always felt in celebrating this day. I make it a point to watch the parade on television with the whole family since it brings us all together as one. There is an automatic sense of patriotism and tremendous pride while watching the parade and hearing the speeches and this is important to be encouraged in our children as well. So both I and my husband will keep the tradition of being together with the family on Republic Day as long as we are there, and hope the kids take the tradition forward. Jai Hind! Jai Bharat!
