5 BIGGEST DIWALI CLASHES IN THE HISTORY OF BOLLYWOOD

It's that time of the year already, when people are busy lighting diyas, bursting crackers and waiting for the biggest Bollywood releases of the year. It is literally fireworks at the box office because almost every year, we have major banners clashing to release their production on this very day. Naturally, competition is fierce. So, just to prep you for what is coming this year, here's a list of all the big banner films that have clashed at the box office in the past.

1. Andaz Apna Apna vs Suhaag (1994)

90s kids, you might remember this. Perhaps the biggest clash of the time. The Salman and Aamir Khan starrer Andaz Apna Apna opened on the same day as Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar starrer Suhaag. While everyone expected the comedy film to perform well at the box office, it was later found that Suhaag took the baton and outperformed Andaz Apna Apna by a large margin. The Salman-Aamir comedy however gained cult status over time and we can't really remember anything from Suhaag except for the one song with time became a cult film later on and we cannot remember anything from Suhaag except the one song—Gore Gore Mukhde Pe.

2. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge vs Yaraana (1995)

If you are thinking how we can even put any other film opposite DDLJ, since it outplayed any other film that year, you are not wrong. But Yaarana was a David Dhawan film and the director was at the top of his game at the time. Besides, the film starred Madhuri Dixit and Rishi Kapoor, who were much bigger stars than Shah Rukh and Kajol at the time. DDLJ was being directed by a debutante, Aditya Chopra, and SRK wasn't known as the king of romance back then. In fact, at that time, no one thought DDLJ could've become such a parameter for romance. Many bet their money on Yaarana. So, It was a clash worth fighting for and it could have easily gone either way but we all know what happened here as we got the longest running film in this industry.

3. Don vs Jaan-E-Mann (2006)

This was the first Bollywood clash I remember from my teenage years. People wearing Black T-shirts which had the DON logo and SRK's photo at the back, while others wore red shirts and Salman's bracelet to promote Jaan-e-Mann. It was then I understood what a clash in Bollywood really meant to the audience. Don, a remake of Chandra Barot's 1978 classic of the same name, had a lot of buzz surrounding it. After all, it had SRK bringing to life a role earlier portrayed by the legendary Amitabh Bachchan. On the other hand, Jaan-E-Mann was a quirky rom-com, high on special effects, starring Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan and Preity Zinta. It was the directorial debut of Shirish Kunder, Farah Khan's husband. The result was too predictable for this one as Don shattered the box-office, earning over Rs 100 crore. Meanwhile, Jaan-E-Mann couldn't manage to hold on the numbers at the office.

4. All The Best vs Blue vs Main Aurr Mrs Khanna (2009)

Teen Tigaada Kaam Bigaada? Take it as three wrestlers fighting in a boxing ring and it's a knock out tournament. Who won? Well, Rohit Shetty dominated with his Ajay Devgn comedy that made Rs 41 crore at the box office. What came as a surprise was that the film beat the Akshay Kumar’s Blue and Salman Khan’s Main Aurr Mrs Khanna, which earned Rs 38 crore and Rs 7 crore respectively. So, it was All the Best all the way in this clash.

5. Jab Tak Hai Jaan vs Son Of Sardaar (2012)

Jab Tak Hai Jaan, which happened to be the late Yash Chopra's last film checked all the right boxes when it came to attracting the audience to the theatres—a star-studded cast, the genre of romance, and of course Shah Rukh Khan. On the other hand, Son of Sardaar, starring Ajay Devgn and Sonakshi Sinha was a main-stream comedy film featuring Sanjay Dutt and Juhi Chawla in supporting roles. Aftermath of this clash? Quite obvious as Jab Tak Hai Jaan ended up being the bigger hit, grossing Rs 211 crore worldwide. Meanwhile, Son Of Sardaar, despite largely negative reviews, managed to gross Rs 150-odd crore as well.
