It is said, that a good beginning is a sign of the good times to come. It has been proved again, this time in the most unpredictable world of Hindi films made in Mumbai. There has be any number of films that have been released during the last three months and it is perhaps for the first time a very long time that most of the films released has done very well, some have been average grossers and surprisingly very few have not been able to leave a mark at the box-office and have failed to draw in the audience. There are many sources authoritative and not so authoritative who are of the belief that this kind of a phenomenon has happened after a very long time.
What is a happy thing to know is that the audience is willing to accept any genre of film and it is the success of“Kesari"which is the latest big hit and the earlier films released during the first few three months of 2019 like“Gully Boy",“Mankarnika--The Queen Of Jhansi",“URI: The Surgical Strike"and the total entertainer“Total Dhamaal"have made a big splash at the box-office which has proved that the audience has taken they have been offered by these films. It also proves that big stars, some good content and massive budgets have worked wonders like they always have, not to forget the contribution of star-power.
But another big surprise is that like“Badhai Ho",a non starcast and yet unusual film, there have been surprises like“Luka Chuppi"has also made it big and made the industry wake up to some new realities they had not expected. They have also woken up to the fact that they could not take the audience for granted and the films which apparently tried to keep to the same old standards like“Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga",“Why Cheat India?"and “Sonchiriya"were forced to fall by the wayside by the discerning audience which is increasingly showing how they have become film-aware and are not willing to be cheated by just girls, glitz and glamour.
What is also of prime interest is that the loud cries and even the angry screams made asking for better content is slowly but surely being heard by filmmakers who are interested in surviving in the business of film entertainment.
Three things that have been wanted most as some of the successful films have proved is that meaningful content is important, that content is presented in the right way and that a blend of entertainment with a dose of enlightenment are of paramount importance to the people who pay very highly for the films they decide to watch. It is the heavy prices of tickets that have taken away more than half of the audience and it will only be in the interest of the industry and the filmmakers working in it to do everything possible to bring back that audience which doesn't mind paying a price provided they are given their money's worth...
These are some of the lessons that the performances of films released from January to March have clearly taught filmmakers and it will be interesting to see what the all-powerful and all-knowing audience have to teach them in the time to come. Clearly, it is not the opinions of the learned critics and film analysts that have mattered, but only the opinions and the decisions of the“public jo sab kuch na hai".
