I had a friend called Dharamveer who worked as the production controller of Nasir Husain.
who told me fascinating stories about how Nasir Hussain made his films and how he was at his best when he wrote the dialogue and when he directed his actors - Ali Peter John
What would you call this act of that little boy ?
Hussain was making a big film called "Yaadon Ki Baaraat" with Dharmendra , Zeenat Aman , Vijay Arora and his nephew Tariq Khan together with a new girl , Kajal Kiran .
But , Dharamveer said he was carried away by a little boy called Aamir Khan who was the son of Tahir Hussain, the brother of Nasir Hussain .
The title song of the film was to be picturised on three brothers during their childhood . The song was " yaadon ki baaraat nikli hai aaj dil ke dwaar se" .
The little boy was to imagine that he was playing a toy guitar . All was well , till it was his turn to play his toy guitar and the boy surprised and even shocked the unit when he asked his uncle ( Nasir Hussain) not to continue the shooting till he had got the hang of moving his fingers on the strings of his guitar and he did not shoot till he was satisfied.
What would you call this act of that little boy ?
It was just weeks to go before the release of his first film as a hero, "Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar"
Those days in Bombay we had night cricket matches ( tennis ball cricket, mostly played in the villages of Bombay ).
The same Dharamveer could convince Aamir to be the chief guest at one such match which was being played on a ground in Sahar Village , exactly where the international airport now stands .
Aamir was surprised when he saw a huge crowd and was told that they had come to see him .
And if the organiser felt that Aamir would just cut a ribbon and say a few words , they were mistaken .
He wanted to be a part of the march at least for an innings . The way he bowled and batted was something the audience had not accepted .
He left only around midnight and when he was leaving ,one of the organisers said , " ye bahut lambaa jaayega , iska paagalpan abhi se dikhayi deta hai".
Aamir had become a star and was shooting for "Parampara" at the Mehboob Studio
Aamir had become a star and was shooting for "Parampara" at the Mehboob Studio . It was a large party scene and director Yash Chopra who was directing an outside his banner film and was paid 50 lakhs of rupees , was in command and among the stars in the scene were Sunil Dutt , Vinod Khanna , Raveena Tandon and Ramya Krishna from the south .
It was like history repeating itself . Aamir was to play the piano in the scene. Even a master of a director like Yash Chopra and the big stars coundnt do a thing when Aamir kept playing the piano till his fingers played the way the man who played the piano during the recording of the song .
"Bahut actors ke saath kaam kiya hai lekin iss ladke ke jaisa koi nahi, Isko toh director banna chaayie tha" Yash Chopra
Aamir was ready for a "take" only when he was happy with his effort. Soon after the scene Yash Chopra said , " behn ke takke maine bahut actors ke saath kaam kiya hai lekin iss ladke ke jaisa koi nahi, Isko toh director banna chaayie tha " was Yash Chopra making a prediction for Aamir ?
Aamir was shooting for a song and dance for Mahesh Bhatt"s " Hum Hai Rahi Pyar Ke" with Juhi Chawla and a number of children somewhere in Juhu .
And when he found out ( in his own way) that Mahesh Bhatt didn't have his heart in the scenes to go with the song ,
He quietly requested Mahesh Bhatt to go home and he took charge of the song
He quietly requested Mahesh to go home and he took charge of the song and not only completed shooting it in time but also saw to it that he gave it his best and the result was the song becoming a highlight of the film .
Is this the reason why some of the best directors think twice before taking on the challenge of directing Aamir ? And is this the reason why big stars are scared of sharing screen space with Aamir ?
