Abbas Sahab Ke Josh Ko To Koi Nahi Mar Saka

Only I know all the trouble I had to take out of sheer gratitude and respect for my mentor Khwaja Ahmad Abbas (without whom like I have been saying for the last forty eight years , I would be nowhere) to   have a plaque named after him near his simple house opposite the J.W Marriott hotel in Juhu.

I had only mentioned the need to have it to my other mentor , Sunil Dutt and he didn’t rest till it was done. But it was not easy. Such jobs were entrusted to the local corporators and in this special case I had to run after a corporator who was an auto-rickshaw driver before he was elected a corporator, thanks to Mr. Sunil Dutt. The man had never heard about K.A.Abbas and went on postponing the naming of the road and the building of the plaque and all he said when he met me was “ wo kya tumhara khaja khaja ka kaam main karunga lekin abhi mere pass bilkul tem(time) nahi hai” .

I was disgusted with “Jadhav Sahab” and finally thought of an idea. I approached Amitabh Bachchan who was given his first break by Abbas and asked him to give me a date and time when he could unveils a plaque in honour of our Guru. He agreed and I went to “Jadhav Sahab” and told him about Amitabh’s coming for the launching and what “Jadhav Sahab” was not doing for eighteen months , he did in three days and we have a grand function with Amitabh spending more than an hour in the place where he had signed “Saat Hindustaani”.

However , within three days , I saw the marble plaque in ruins. I made enquires and found out that some drunken young man from the J-49 pub had done the damage. I met the owner of the pub who agreed to build it all again but there seemed to be some jinx or some enemy of Abbas. The plaque was damaged again. The Municipal Corporation put up a tin board with his name spelt as Khaja Abbas. I then saw the new plaque covered with a black plastic cover and my blood screamed every time I passed that ghastly sight. I saw a miracle last week when I saw a new plaque in the same place. I don’t know who had done this great service , but I will always be grateful to whoever he or she is
