Abhinay Deo to make a socio-sports film for a theatrical release in 2019
Abhinay Deo, known for being a clutter-breaker in the industry is ready to tap an all-new segment with his next project, a socio-sports film based on the transformation of India’s national psyche.
The film is a docu-fiction about the transition of a nation, a story of billion people rising above the shadow of self-doubt to be confident in their own skin, with sport as the backdrop and an essential catalyst in the transformation.
The film puts together two dimensions of courage and identity, while one is portrayed through an audacious cricket captain under the harsh glare of the national spotlight. The other reflects the life of an ordinary aam aadmi, questioning the relentlessly defined social structure in a small town in Northern India.
Both the stories stand strong, with the principal characters fighting the demons of tradition, cultural classism and orthodoxy. The film highlights a constant human conflict between acceptance and self-determination, amidst duties and rights, between self-dignity and respecting others.
Tapping in this robust yet innovative theme, Abhinay says, “True to the nature of the project itself, the film brings together the documentary, fictional and cultural film experts across the globe. We’re collaborating with New York-based Stick Figure Productions, known for their last film Chasing Tyson directed by Oscar-nominated director Steven Cantor, for this project.”
“Whereas the Executive Producers are Rohan and Masha Sajdeh (or a Chicago-based investor team), who came up with the original idea and the screenplay has been written by an LA-based team of WGA writers under the supervision of Agnello Dias, India’s preeminent Ad Creative Director.”, He added.
Unlike the industry’s prior takes on cricket, this film is about modern India as told through the eyes of an ordinary Indian. It uses historical footage of real people and events, to reveal an untold story of India through cricket.  The story also uses a fictional element to humanize the larger social change sweeping through India.  The film is set for a theatrical release next year.
