Acting Under Sumitra Bhave’s Direction In Home Sweet Home Was Like Learning The Economics Of Filmmaking, Says Mrunal Kulkarni

Mrinal Kulkarni has proved herself not only as a good actress but also an exemplary director on her own right. The actress said that it was a pleasure to act in Sumira Bhave’s latest film Home Sweet Home she could learn the economics of filmmaking even while she was facing the camera for her film as an actress. Says Mrunal, “I made my debut as a director with Prem Manjhe Prem Manjhe Prem Astha in Marathi after acting in films for almost 22 years. Today I am happy that a lot of women directors are emerging on the scene, though there were hardly a few earlier. Like Sumitra Maushi, Pratima, Swapna Waghmare Joshi, Samruddhi Pote, Kanchan Adhikari etc”.
Talking at the recently concluded 17th Third Asian Film Festival at Citylight in Mumbai, Mrunal confesses frankly that she feels that direction is an altogether different ball game. Mrunal adds, “Initially when I jumped into the fry as a director, I was actually not very sure at all of how I will be able to emerge as a director because I feel that from conception stage to watching a film with the audiences, direction is very tough unlike acting which is very easy. Though I and heard the script from her seven years ago, I felt that the subject of Home Sweet Home is as relevant today as it was then as it is about each and every woman of today. The film revolves around a daughter’s right to inherit her father’s property today. We shot the film at Sumitraji’s house. I used to make it a point to sleep on my stomach for ten minutes before the shot”.
