He lived in a chawl near the Central cinema in Girgaun in South Mumbai called Ramchandra Chawl which was mostly occupied by mill workers. Prasan and Ravi were his two sons and he had a daughter - Ali Peter John
He was a small time dealer in artificial jewellery and went selling his ornaments to different studios and OFFICES.
He always carried the photograph of Ravi in his purse in the hope of showing the photograph to some of his customers who were big and small filmmakers.
It was his day to visit the well known filmmaker V Shantaram who was one of his big and regular customers.
Shantaram was having a look at all the artificial jewellery when Amarnath Kapoor took out his purse and casually showed it to Shantaram who found the boy in the photograph very handsome and asked Amarnath to send the boy to him the next morning.
Shantaram was shooting for "Sehra" in Rajasthan and asked Ravi Kapoor to start shooting for the film as an extra in Jaipur.
He received favourable reports about Ravi from his assistants and production managers.
He called Ravi to his OFFICE after the shooting of "Sehra" over and after having a good look at him decided to cast him as the hero of his next film , "Beet Gayaa Pattharone" with his daughter Rajshree as his leading lady.
Shantaram was not happy with the name Ravi and gave Ravi a new screen name , Jeetendra.
Shantaram was very happy with his discovery and the very fact that Shantaram had taken on Jeetendra spread all over the industry and he was signed for many other films till he signed "Farz" to be made in the south with the image of a desi James Bond.
The grand success of the film made Jeetendra a very big star and there was no stopping him.
It doesn't need to be said that if there was one man who was jubilant about Jeetendra becoming a star , it was his father, the one time dealer in artificial jewellery.
Jeetendra was so grateful to his father that he let him handle all his money matters till he was alive.
And Jeetendra has never forgotten Shantaram who first saw the sparks in him. Years later when Shantaram was releasing "Shantarama" his autobiography in Marathi , Amarnath Kapoor ordered his son to fly down to Bombay to attend the grand release function even though he was shooting two shifts a day in Hyderabad.
