‘Amol Kolhe was the perfect choice to play ‘Godse’s character in “Why I Killed Gandhi’’, insists director Ashok Tyagi.

It may be recalled that recently the same versatile acclaimed star actor Amol Kolhe played legendary Chhatrapati Shivaji in widely-watched Marathi TV Shows including Raja Shivchhatrapati as well as Chhatrapati Sambhaji in Marathi TV Series Swarajyarakshak Sambhaji on Zee Marathi.

The trailer of the film was released last month and the movie is all set to release on the Limelight OTT platform on Sunday, January 30, 2022 (Martyrs’ Day) .

The film was reportedly made a few years ago. The producers/makers had declared that ‘Why I Killed Gandhi’, the film is an authentic “picturization of the legal statement” made by Godse during the Gandhi murder trial, and aims to give a “radically alternative perspective to look at the history of 20th century India”.

Enthuses veteran Bollywood movies director Ashok Tyagi ( who has directed this historical OTT movie) speaking to this writer exclusively, “ Our film ‘Why I Killed Gandhi’ is a 47-minute slick docu-drama and is absolutely authentic and there is no fiction at all.

It’s a divine coincidence that we got such a brilliant super-actor Amol Kolhe , the perfect, ideal choice, to play Godse’s screen-character so convincingly. It’s a lucid logical detailed counter-point statement by Godse justifying his actions and includes authentic footage from the archives.

In the self-explanatory historical movie we have done everything within the legal parameters and guidelines.

Countering objections and protests from a few eminent political persons , Amol Kolhe issued a clarification through a social media post and said that although the film is being released now, it was shot in 2017. He also urged people to differentiate between ‘reel life’ and ‘real life’.

“Sometimes, one suddenly comes across roles where you do not agree with the ideology but they are challenge you as an artist. Nathuram Godse’s role was one such. On a personal level, I am not a votary of Gandhi’s assassination or glorification of Nathuram, but I have tried to do justice with the role that came to me. As an artist, one must respect the freedom of expression and as a person, the freedom of thought! I hope that people look at this work with an open mind,” Kolhe posted on his Facebook account on Thursday.
