The scooters were not selling well and had accumulated a huge inventory. Others like Lambretta were taking over the market.

The owner of Piaggio, which used to manufacture aircrafts before WWII, approached the film director to consider his little scooter in his movie. The Vespa was designed so that women with long skirts could ride it.

The Film Director agreed and those iconic scenes made the movie a classic and Vespa a household name....??? Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday.
