God lives inside the legendary dev anand

There are some films whose history and fate really baffles me . And one of them is " Hum Dono", a film produced by Dev Anand under his banner of Navketan Films and if directed by the genius of Vijay Anand ( the credit for direction is originally given to Amar jeet who was the brilliant publicity designer of Navketan Films ) and the film has Dev Anand in a double role with Nanda and Sadhana as the two leading ladies - Ali Peter John

The film based on the second world war is about the insecurities of love , the ugly and sensitive colours of war and human relationships and how they are threatened in the face of war .

The film was the brilliant handiwork of Vijay Anand who once again proved how brilliant he is as a director and especially as a screenplay and dialogue writer .

And another highlight of the film are the absolutely brilliant lyrics of Sahir Ludhianvi and matching music by Jaidev , with some of the best songs sung by Mohammad Rafi , Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle.

The film was a hit and was released in its colourized version on the occasion of its 50th year in 2011.

The songs are memorable and are fresh even after 60 years . Can any one who claims to have any knowledge of Hindi film music ever forget gems of songs like " Abhi na jao chhodke "

" Main zindagi ka saath nibhaata chala gaya, har fiqr ko dhuven mein udaata chala gaya " ( a song which became Dev Anand 's motto in life ) , "Allah tero naam ", " Prabhu tera naam"
Kabhi khud pe kabhi halaat pe rona aaya" and ,"Jaaha mein aisa kaun hai". Every song is a promise to be remembered forever.

I had seen the film when I was twelve years old , when I was eighteen years old, when I was twenty - five , thirty and sixty years old and every time it has enchanted me like when I had seen it first and the scenes and dialogue only grows more meaningful and intense.

And if there is one entire sequence which blows my mind , it is the scene in the mess of the Army when Major Verma ( Dev Anand ) and Captain Anand ( again Dev Anand ) meet for the first time .

I feel this scene is one of the most interesting , intense , entertaining , philosophical and realistic scenes shot in a bar , so what if it is a bar ( mess) in the battle field.

The scene opens with Captain Anand entering the bar and telling the bar keeper ( Rashid Khan playing John ) that he is looking for Major Verma .

When Captain Anand calls Rashid Khan a " Badtameez insaan " , it sounds like he is decorating the bar keeper with a medal.

Major Verma who has a walrus moustache is bewildered when he sees Captain Anand face to face and finds a complete resemblance to him , except for his hair style and his moustache .

Major Verma extends a hand of friendship and asks Captain Anand to have a drink with him .

Captain Anand says he doesn't drink and Major Verma almost orders him to sit and have at least half a peg and Captain Anand agrees even though he is reluctant initially .

Major Verma tells Captain Anand who is emotional about his beloved , Mita ( Sadhana) not remembering him and Major Verma in his flamboyant way tells Captain Anand , " agar woh tumse pyaar karti hai , toh woh tumko zaroor yaad karegi , nahi toh usko bhool jao, forget her" and Captain Anand looks very distraught .

And Major Verma goes on a philosophical talk about the life of a soldier and says , " Woh kaunsi taaqat hai jo humko apne maa baap , biwi , premika aur maa ( he pauses after the word "maa" and turns his face away from Captain Anand to probably hide his tears ) and he continues saying, " na nafrat acchi hai , na jung , na himsa, lekin hum phir bhi kandhon par bandook utaate hai , aur phir ye nahi dekhte ki kisi ki biwi ka dil toote , kisi premika ka dil toote , na maa ka dil toote ( and again when he comes to the word "maa " , he chokes , this emotion is perhaps taken from the real life of Dev Anand who has always been very sensitive and highly emotional when it comes to his mother or any other mother) .

Major Verma talks about insaanyat and haiwaanyat and barbariyat ko bhadkana and by the time he finishes talking about the impact of war on human relations , he sees Captain Anand sitting with his head down and singing , " kabhi khud par kabhi halaat par rona aaya "( one of the best songs written by Sahir ) and after the end of the song Major Verma and Captain Anand walk out hand in hand .

The scene ends only to begin the most dramatic and emotional scenes of the film which is laced with high drama , emotional moments , prayers , suspicion and even an attempt to murder , but it all ends with a very pleasant surprise .

I think this film has Dev Anand at his best . He was even nominated for the Filmfare best actor award.

He always considered " Hum Dono" to be one of the better films made by Navketan but didn't get the appriciation or the awards that it generally deserved .

DEV SAHAB NE JO BHI FILMEIN BANAAYI UNME JAAN THI . UNHONE JEEVAN KI SCHAAYON KO APNE TARIKHE SE PESH KIYA , BINA YE SOCCHE KI UNKI FILMEIN LOGO KO PASAND AAYE YA NA AAYE .

FILM BANAANE MEIN BHI UNKA USOOL WAHI THA ..... MAIN ZINDAGI KA SAATH NIBHAATA CHALA GAYA AUR HAR FIQR KO DHUVEN MEIN UDAATA CHALA GAYA
