Assamese Film Midnight Song Is Arunjit Borah’s Tribute To International Women’s Day

I should say I was really zapped when recently I got an opportunity to watch the young and dynamic Assamese filmmaker Arunjit Borah’s debut feature film Midnight Song, produced by his dear friend Aparajita Bhuyan and featuring Rupam Chetia, Kalpana Kalita, Monuj Borkotoky etc besides Manjusreee Kalita and Diganta Borah, under the banner of Media People - Jyothi Venkatesh

The breezy political thriller based on a crisis of relationship gone sour, revolves around a quiet housewife Mou

The breezy political thriller based on a crisis of relationship gone sour, revolves around a quiet housewife Mou played effortlessly with sincerity by Kalpana Kalita, who is unfortunately stuck in an unhappy marriage with her husband, Bikramjit, played with aplomb by Rupam Chetia.

In this chamber drama driven by a situation where there is no element of horror, drama, suspense and surprise, enters a stranger played with a sense of mystery by Monuj Borkotoky, who poses as a social worker annoyed with the establishment as such.

For years, Mou has held her tongue and served Bikramjit, but in return, he has been ungrateful and rude.

Mou and Bikram take a trip to their bungalow in the country. What starts out as a normal night takes a strange turn when this unexpected stranger-visitor shows up.

Mou and Bikram give the visitor hospitality, and even as Mou talks to the newcomer, she begins to realize that there is more to life than her selfish husband and unhappy marriage.

The series of events of the night unwind alarmingly, when, hold your breath--one person becomes a murderer while another becomes refreshingly alive for the first time in years.

Mou is faced with a decision when the morning comes, and with her decision, her entire world changes for the better.

The story has been penned by Sanjeev Giriwer, while the screenplay has been penned by both Arunjit Borah and Sanjeev Giriwer.

The dialogues have been written by Arunjit Borah and Sanjev Giriwer in tandem with Rajdweep

It is interesting to note that the release of the film Midnight Song, which was shot in just around 10 days, on a very limited which Arunjit does not wish to divulge to the outside world, is the first ever Assamese film to see the light of the day this year in January after the COVID-19 pandemic surfaced in Assam.

Interestingly, it also coincided with the 50th year celebration of the Anuradha Cinema Hall in Assam’s Guwahati city, which is one of the oldest cinematheques in the state.

The target of Arunjit Borah is to reach a larger number of audiences with a popular streaming platform.

After making a fast paced film which is primarily about a love triangle, Arunjit now also has plans to make a web series in Hindi and also a feature film in Hindi.

As he is interested in being known as a Hindi film maker rather than just a Assamese filmmaker as he feels that besides the fact that he is an Indian by birth, Hindi is our national language.

“My Assamese film Midnight Song is my way of tribute to the International Women’s Day this year”, signs off Arunjit Borah, whose favorite filmmakers in India and abroad are Martin Scorsese, Majid Majidi, Jahnu Baruah, Rima Das, Anurag Kashyap and last but not the least Rahul Rawail, “whose film Betaab mesmerized me when I was a child and inspired me to take to filmmaking as my passion.”
