Those days Amitabh Bachchan used to shoot two shifts in a day, one starting at 7 am and ending at 2pm and the second starting at 3 pm and going on till 10 pm or even beyond. He was living at "Pratiksha" with his parents - Ali Peter John
He had built a temple within "Pratiksha" and never left his house before praying at the temple, however busy he was. One morning I was sitting with his parents, Dr Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji.
Amitabh was in a great hurry and rushed out of the gate, but his mother called out to him saying " munna, itni jadi bhi kya hai ? " Amitabh understood what his mother ment and rushed back to the temple, prayed for a few minutes, then touched the feet of parents and only then left for his shooting.
This was the way his parents had trained him and he followed their teachings till they were alive and still follows their teachings and asks Abhishek , Aishwarya and the family to follow the teaching of his parents .
Amitabh had a small temple even when he lived in an apartment in a building called " Mangal" and prayed there every morning and night. He knew the Geeta by heart and could recite verses from it at any time .
He still has temples in "Jalsa" and even in his office in a bunglow called "Janak" and had pictures of gods and goddesses at his ABCL office in the Juhu Ajanta Hotel.
He has basically been a very God - fearing man and believes that prayers can work greater wonders than all the superstitious retuals and practices followed by thousands of people.
He has not fallen for the attractions and temptations offered by instant gods and godmen and godwomen. He believes in respecting all religions and genuinely holy people, but follows God and only God. He once told me,.
"Dua se pahaado ko bhi haataya ja sakta hai aur sukhe mein baarish bhi barsaaya ja sakta hai. Duaa nahi hoti toh hum jaise bhagwan ke bande kaise kuch maangte bhagwan se aur bhagwan ko hammari zarooraton ka ahsaas kaisa hota.
Agar hum sab ek hoker aur haat jodkar dua maangte, toh duniya mein dard, mushkile aur haar nahi hoti. Meri Khwaaish hai ki ek din woh bhi aaye jab hum sab ghutno par gir kar dua maante hai " .
I had never heard Amitabh speaking in such a holy, religious and philosophical way. But then he has always being like that, " an angry young man " and also "a dedicated and devoted man of God " .....
The real test for Amitabh came when he met with that accident in Bangalore. It was a time when he had to face a tough battle between being a man of God and a man of superstitions. Thousands of people of all religions prayed for his speedy recovery and they had their own ways of begging of God to save Amitabh's life.
It all started when the nuns and priests at the hospital were he was admitted first with a serious injury began praying for him. The chain of prayers continued when he was admitted in a serious condition to the Breach Candy Hospital in Bombay.
It didn't just stop with Christian prayer, but people were praying for his good health in every mandir, masjid, gurudwara and even places of worship in remote plases and different corners of the world.
On the one hand, there were prayers and on the other hand, there were lakhs of people who offered all kinds of sacrifices and even gave endless quantities of blood, even little boys and girls lined up outside the hospital to donate blood for his various operations and for further recovery of his diferent organs and senses.
Big producers and business men walked for kilometres and even walked on their hands and their heads. One producer S Raamnathan walked on his head around a well for seven hours without stop.
A young man walked from Ahmedabad to Breach Candy Hospital with a coconut perched on head and holding it erect till he reached Breach Candy.
There were thousands of priests of different religions who prayed for him outside the hospital. His guest room in the hospital was packed with all kinds of beads talismans and other kinds of offerings which they believe could save him .
And finally it was only doctors like Dr Farokh Udwadia, Dr Jayant Barve and Dr Shah who saved his life. And Amitabh still believes that the supernatural elements may have played a part in saving his life, but it was ultimately medicine and the efforts of the doctors that saved him .
A month after Amitabh totally recovered, he followed the advice of his " sir" Raamnathan and personaly visited every holy place of every religion known and unknown to show his gratitude towards all the gods .
And Amitabh had an entire room full of all the amulets and every kind of holy object sent to him or brought for him from his fans and even his rivals who had become fans. I don't know whether that room which was considered precious and sacred in Pratiksha still finds a place in his new house "Jalsa"
AMITABH BACHAA HAI TOH SIRF LOGO KI DUAANAAN SE BAAKI SAB ITTEFAAQ BAAKI SAB JO HUVA HAI ,WOH YA TOH ITTEFAQ HAI YA CHAMATKAAR HOGA .
