B’day Boy Amol Palekar-Who Returns To ‘Theatre’ After 25 Years, Has Acted With The Topmost Heroines

Tomorrow (Nov 24^th), eminent veteran theatre actor-multi-lingual film lead actor-writer-director-painter-artist Amol Palekar ( also known for his frank outspoken views) will bring in his 75^th birthday. What better way to celebrate the joyous occasion than to return ( after a gap of 25 years) to one of his prime passions . With the theatre-play performance of his social-thriller  drama ‘Kusur’ co-directed by his talented wife Sandhya Gokhale.

What makes Amol Palekar a unique star-hero of the 70’s and 80’s, is that he managed to carve his own distinct identity as the ‘young-smart-middle-class-guy-next-door’ despite the fierce competition of the rugged dashing North Indian heroes who reigned in Bollywood.  “ An immensely talented actor who loved to improvise, Amol’s USP was that the ‘common man’ in the audience could easily identify and connect with his personality and his grounded characters”, director Basu-da Chatterji who cast Amol as the lead opposite Vidya Sinha in  landmark musical movies  like ‘Rajnigandha’ and ‘Chhoti Si Baat’ . In fact versatile Amol won the ‘Best Actor’ Filmfare Award for his benchmark  ‘double/dual role’ performance in the milestone comedy ‘Golmaal’ (1979) . Interesingly although he was synonymous with the ‘common-man’ screen look, the charismatic Amol has the distinction  of being paired with  almost all the top star-heroines of his era.

Even the ‘late’ Sridevi made her Bollywood debut opposite Amol in this movie ‘Solva Saawan’ ( 1979). The dynamic Palekar  also co-starred with Tina Munim (nowAmbani ) in ‘Baton Baton Mein’ , opposite Zarina Wahab ( Chitchor) , Shabana Azmi ( Apne Paraye) and with Rekha  (Jeevan Dhara),  with Smita Patil (Bhumika),  opposite Parveen Babi ( Rang Birangi), with Zeenat Aman ( Baat Ban Jaaye )   and even opposite Sharmila Tagore ( Marathi movie ‘Samaantar’) . We wish Amol-jee a very cheerful birthday with an active, healthy , creatively fulfilling life ahead.
