If all goes well, veteran yet evergreen versatile Bollywood composer-singer Bappi-Lahiri who celebrated his 69th birthday ( in the U.S.) on November 27th, may sing and record his composer son Bappa Lahiri’s composition, setting a rare precedent - Chaitanya Padukone
“We have in the past, recorded a devotional-spiritual album. But this time I am hoping to record a special youth-centric pop number composed by Bappa, who is also based in the U.S. ,” enthused Alokesh (that’s Bappi-da’s real name) .
Asked why he was more into ‘playback singing’ these days instead of ‘composing’ for Hindi movies, international icon Bappi-da shot back, “ Frankly speaking, I am not comfortable with the current trend of ‘sharing’ composing credits with other multiple music directors for the same movie.
If I get to compose all the songs , I am game to score Hindi film-music,” insists Lahiri, who has a large number of chartbuster ( disco, western, Indian folk-music based, raga-based and fusion ) filmy songs to his credit.
Backed by film-producer Manju Bharti ,the adventurous senior composer is also gearing up to make his debut as a ‘movie director’ for a film titled ‘Ek Adhura Sangeet’.
Justifies Bappi-da, “ In my jubilant musical career which completed nearly five decades, I have achieved in all possible fields relating to film and pop-music, but only film-direction was left out.
Taking inspiration from my ‘Mama-jee’ the legendary versatile Kishore-da Kumar who was a master-all-rounder, I felt I should also dabble in ‘direction’,” smiles the ‘Disco King’ who is immensely popular for his ‘swag’ style-statement of wearing thick layers of glittering gold chains, pendants and bracelets and branded dark-glasses. “Most of them are all-faith religious symbols.
It has been my ‘global identity’ for four decades. These days, iconic Western pop-singers also flaunt gold chains and dark glasses, since I do not have a copyright on that,” quips Bappi-da jokingly. ‘Pyar bina ‘Chain’ kahaan rey’-—right Bappi-da ?
