I have not had my own sister and so I really don’t know or understand the significance and sanctity of the relationship. But if the relationship between a brother and sister has lasted for thousands of years , I am sure there must be something very good and strong about it.

There are however some who believe that the relationship between a brother and sister can be made and with all my experiences and experiments with this brother and sister relationship which is made or rather manufactured cannot be the same as the relationship was created. I wish all brothers and sisters all over the world a very happy Bhai Dooj or Bhau Beej and on this very special occasion , I give you some examples from the Hindi film industry to let you know that there have been relationships real and made.

If there is one man who has some of the best sisters who are not really his sisters , it is Gulzar , the leading poet , writer and director . Among his sisters who have tied rakhis on his wrist is Jaya Bhaduri who had accepted him as her “Bhai” even before she had started her career. It was perhaps this relationship that made them work together in some very good films like Saregama , and Koshish , both with Sanjeev Kumar who was also a Bhai of Jaya and the best friend of Gulzar.

The other sisters of Gulzar are Hema Malini , Sharmil Tagore and even Rekha and this actresses have done their best films with their Bhai . Jaya has been Gulzars sister now for more than fifty years .

And if there is one sister who has some of the best Bhais , it is undoubtedly Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar. She has one Bhai in her own family , Pandit Hridayanath Mangeshkar who is the only brother of his four sisters . The other Bhai who has been very close to Lataji , it is the celebrated composer Madan Mohan who the nightingale has always referred to as ” Madan Bhaya” and the nightingale has given some of her best songs i under the baton of her Madan Bhaya .

The bond between this brother and sister according to those who knew them was so strong that they lived up to their bond as brother and sister till the very end and when Madan Mohan suddenly died of a heart attack , Lataji had gone into a long spell of mourning.

Lataji also had an “elder brother” in Dilip Kumar who she called Bade Bhaya and the thespian always addressed her as ” meri chhoti behan ” . Raj Kapoor too considered Lataji as his sister , till they had a tiff over Latajis own brother who was to score the music for Satyam Shivam Sundaram as per the promise made to Lataji by Raj but was a promise that Raj did not keep and signed Laxmikant – Pyarelal who incidentally got their first break because of Lataji. Among the other Bhaiyas of Lataji were Mohammad Rafi , Talat Mahmood , Hemant Kumar and Salil Choudhury. Lataji has always been known as Didi ( Sister) and even now when she is 92 years old even youngsters sometimes call her Didi.

There had been cases of some made relationships between a brother and a sister going wrong and ending up in a very different kind of relationship . The most well-known case however is the one between the popular Hindi and Punjabi actress of the sixties Nishi who was a sister of a struggling filmmaker called Rajkumar Kohli but ended up marrying Kohli who went on to be a successful filmmaker.
