Karisma Birthday Special: When Karisma Met Shahid During Dil To Pagal Hai Song! By Mehak Reejonia

A superstar. A bad hair day. And a song shoot. Today we will talk about how Karisma met Shahid!

On the occasion of the 48th birthday of the 90s superstar Karisma Kapoor, let’s talk about the time when she met the then-background dancer Shahid Kapoor.

Even though she had made a name for herself before her 1997 flick Dil To Pagal Hai, it still is among the most memorable movies of hers. This Shah Rukh Khan starrer blockbuster had a flamboyant dance number “Le Gayi Le Gayi”. Remember?

This iconic song is known for its tough choreography and a large troupe of background dancers. Many of you must be aware of Shahid Kapoor’s stint as a background dancer in his youth. Back in 1996, Shahid joined Shiamak Davar’s dance academy.

Dil To Pagal Hai was a musical film whose songs required a whole troupe of skilled dancers. In the song Le Gayi, Shahid was among them. In an interview with Filmfare, Shahid revealed that due to his bad hair day, Karisma had to do 15 retakes. Funny right? Well, it wasn’t for him, though.

He shared that “There was one guy who was slightly offbeat. I swear, with really big hair on his head, that’s me. I remember I won’t call her Karisma because at that time she was Karisma Kapoor, had to do 15 retakes because of me”.

You must be thinking how Karisma reacted? Well, much to his embarrassment she frustratingly called him out. Shahid added “And, once she turned back and said 'Ye kaun hai? Kaun hai ye? (Who is this)' And, I was like hiding myself and saying 'Main nahi hoon, main nahi hoon (it's not me).'

I had just joined Shiamak Davar and my hair used to settle down half a beat after I settled down. So, it was actually not my fault. It was just the length of my hair”.
