His life has been anything but ordinary, and he has lived to tell the tale of his unusual and almost uncontrollable existence. From a turbulent childhood to a troubled youth, he was known for his unique stardom that reached sky-high during stormy times and later for being convicted as a criminal. The Extraordinary Life of Sanjay Dutt: From Stardom to Redemption His parents, Sunil Dutt and Nargis fought against the world for their son, dedicating their entire lives to battling in courts and running between prisons. Despite their efforts, Sanjay Dutt was ultimately convicted by the Supreme Court and sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment. He spent his time in Pune’s Yerwada Jail, working like any other dangerous criminal, making paper bags to earn a few rupees. He saved this money to buy gifts for his twin children, with the hope that one day he would be released and live a life far removed from his past, never to return to such a life again. As his family and thousands of fans eagerly awaited Sanjay Dutt’s release from Yerwada Jail on February 25, their support remained unwavering. Due to his good behavior in prison, his sentence was reduced by five years. Fondly known as Sanju Baba by everyone in the jail, Sanjay Dutt’s journey has been one of immense challenges and redemption. Born as the eldest son of Sunil Dutt and Nargis, Sanju's parents had a dramatic love story. Sunil Dutt, a rank newcomer who had worked in Mehboob Khan's "Mother India," risked his life and career by jumping into flames to save Nargis. Despite their busy lives as actors, Sunil and Nargis showered Sanju with love and care, but their demanding careers left them with little time to see how their Sanju Baba was growing up. They decided to send him to a boarding school when they discovered he was headed down the wrong path. However, being away from home only led Sanju into the company of other troubled boys. He started taking drugs at a very young age, and his parents learned about his addiction only when he returned as a drug addict. However, his condition did not deter him from his goal of being a star like his father and his father took a keen interest in seeing him grow enough to be able to take on challenges as an actor. He was studying acting under the supervision of Professor Roshan Taneja, one of the best teachers of acting in India. He was launched by his parents with great fanfare at Mehboob Studios where the entire industry greeted him and his parents, who had become a major source of inspiration for the industry. Sanjay Dutt started his career as a leading man in "Rocky", directed by his father and discovered by Dev Anand, with Tina Munim as his leading lady. He somehow managed to complete the film, but not before he could experience the pain of his mother suffering from cancer. This affected him so much that he started drinking and taking drugs heavily, which reflected in his performance as an actor and also caused him to lose many good offers. He was signed by many filmmakers but that did not change his lifestyle. There came a time when the lethal combination of drugs and alcohol made him a wild and violent young man who did not even think twice while trying to attack his father. It was then when things got completely out of hand that his father decided to send him to a rehabilitation center in Germany from where he returned as a completely reformed young man luckily for him the industry was waiting for him with open arms to welcome him. His new life as an actor began with a film called "Jaane Ki Baazi" and the title was like a sign of the times and things to come. He was reaching a new height as a star with the release of his films especially “Gumrah” and “Khalnayak”. It seemed that the happy days were here again for him but not many knew how his mind was working at that time. In 1993 there were major riots and bomb blasts in Mumbai. He was shooting for “Gumrah” with Mahesh Bhatt in Seychelles when his father asked him to return to Mumbai as soon as possible. The Chief Minister of that time, Mr. Sharad Pawar who was a close friend of his father (Sunil Dutt) assured Dutt that he would only be put under some investigation but when he landed at the Mumbai airport he was immediately arrested, handcuffed, and taken into police custody. That was the beginning of the storm in his life and his family’s life. From that day at the airport till now and till he is finally released after 23 years of living a life that has no life, it has been a journey of hell for Sanjay Dutt. He was first married to Richa Sharma with whom he has a daughter Trishala who is now twenty-four years old and lives in the US. Richa died of cancer at a young age. Sanjay had many other affairs of the heart, but the most well-known was with Riya Pillai, which was at a time when he was in serious trouble and was an enemy of the country. He was in and out of jail and even did meaningful films like "Munna Bhai MBBS", "Vaastu" and "Lage Raho Munnabhai". But the sword of Damocles kept hanging over his head and despite this he married Maanyata Dutt who not only took care of his family but even surprised his fans he stood by the woman who he felt could bring peace to his life and they soon had twins but before Sanjay could enjoy married life, he was finally found guilty by the Supreme Court and this is the life he has been living for more than four years, just coming out once on parole or furlough during which he kept away from all the action in the industry and he spent time with his family. It is now almost certain that Sanjay Dutt is out as a free man, not only free from jail and all the controversies but also free to start life again, now dreaming of a new life and fulfilling some of the ambitions he nurtured while he spent those lonely moments in jail and in the company of policemen and other hardened criminals.
