Actor Dev Anand was born on September 26, 1923, in Shakargarh tehsil of Gurdaspur district (now Narowal district, Pakistan) of undivided Punjab. Dev Anand started his career at the Military Censor Office in Churchgate, Bombay on a salary of Rs 200 and joined the Indian People's Theater Association as a member along with his elder brother Chetan.

Dev Anand's Legacy: Brothers in Cinema and Early Life

Dev Anand was the second of three brothers in Hindi cinema. His brothers are Chetan Anand and Vijay Anand. His sister, Sheel Kanta Kapoor, is the mother of famous film director Shekhar Kapur. He graduated in English literature from Government College, Lahore. After his graduation, Dev Anand left his hometown and moved to Bombay in the early 1940s.

Dev Anand made his debut as an actor in 1946 with "Hum Ek Hain". By the time his film "Ziddi" was released in 1947, he had become a superstar. A man of many talents, Dev Anand gave countless hits like 'Paying Guest', 'Baazi', 'Jewel Thief', 'CID', 'Johnny Mera Naam', 'Amir Garib', 'Warrant', 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna' and 'Des Pardes'.

When his contemporaries like Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar stopped playing lead roles in films, the versatile actor did not lose his innate romantic spirit and continued to woo his young heroines in films like "Johnny Mera Naam", "Des Pardes", "Hare Rama Hare Krishna" and others.
