Farhan Akhtar made his directorial debut with the youth-oriented film Dil Chahta Hai (2001), which was highly praised for its realistic portrayal of modern Indian youth. The film won the National Award for Best Hindi Film and the Filmfare Critics Awards for Best Film and Best Screenplay. He subsequently directed the war film Lakshya (2004), the action thriller Don (2006), and its sequel Don 2 (2011).

Farhan Akhtar made his acting debut with the musical drama Rock On!! (2008). The film earned him his second National Film Award and a Filmfare Best Male Debut Award as a producer. He starred in, wrote the dialogues for, and produced the film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), a film about friendship and a road trip.

 The film won him the Filmfare Best Film, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Dialogue awards.
He then played the role of sprinter Milkha Singh in the biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013), winning the Filmfare Best Actor Award. His other notable films include Dil Dhadakne Do (2015), Wazir (2016), The Sky Is Pink (2019), and Toofan (2021).

Early life and family

Farhan Akhtar was born in Mumbai. He is the second child of Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani. He has an elder sister, writer and director Zoya Akhtar. Their ancestors were from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. Farhan was very young when his parents divorced. His father married actress Shabana Azmi in 1984. His mother took over the family home in Bandra Bandstand and raised the children there.

Farhan attended Maneckji Cooper School in Mumbai and then earned a law degree from H.R. College. His father is Muslim by birth and upbringing, but describes himself as an atheist, while his mother is from an Iranian Parsi family and has remained indifferent to religion. Farhan Akhtar has also described himself as an atheist.

Farhan's family hails from Khairabad in the Awadh region of Uttar Pradesh and he comes from a long lineage of Urdu poets. He is the grandson of renowned Urdu poet Jan Nisar Akhtar and great-grandson of Muztar Khairabadi. On his mother's side, he is the nephew of child actor Daisy Irani and first cousin of choreographer-director Farah Khan and film director Sajid Khan.

Private life

Farhan Akhtar married Adhuna Bhabani in 2000, with whom he had been in a relationship for three years. The two met during the filming of his directorial debut, Dil Chahta Hai, which also marked Adhuna's debut as a Bollywood hairstylist.
They have two daughters, Shakya and Akira. On January 21, 2016, the couple announced their separation, and their divorce was finalized on April 24, 2017. Adhuna Bhabani received custody of the children.

Farhan Akhtar began dating video jockey Shibani Dandekar in 2018. On February 19, 2022, the two married without any religious ceremony at his farmhouse in Khandala.

Career

At the age of 17, Farhan Akhtar apprenticed in film distribution and direction on Yash Chopra's film Lamhe (1991). He then worked for nearly three years at the advertising production house "Script Shop." He also worked as an assistant director to Pankaj Parasher on Himalaya Putra (1997), before moving into directing and writing.

The film is about the Battle of Rezang La, one of the major battles of the Sino-Indian War. Following this, Farhan Akhtar will begin work on Don 3 in 2026. Ranveer Singh will play the lead role, while the female lead has not yet been confirmed.
