Govind Nihalani, born on 19 December in Karachi, is an Indian film director, cinematographer, screenwriter as well as producer. He is known for his work in Hindi cinema and especially for his role in the parallel cinema movement.
Govind Nihalani Started his career as a cinematographer
Let us tell you that he started his career with V.K. He worked as Murthy's assistant cinematographer, and after that, he pursued his career in this field. He was also involved in cinematography for all of Shyam Benegal's previous films and Richard Attenborough's Oscar-winning period biographical drama Gandhi (1982). Both Nihalani and Benegal are known for their socially relevant films.
Govind's Directed Film ‘Aakrosh’
After cinematography, Nihalani moved in the direction, and his first directorial film was ‘Aakrosh’, a legal drama. In this film, veteran actors like Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Smita Patil, and Amrish Puri were in the lead roles. Let us tell you that this film won the Golden Peacock Award for Best Film at the Indian International Film Festival held in Delhi in 1981. After this, in 1983 he directed the film ‘Ardh Satya’ based on the story of S. D. Panwalkar.

Govind Nihalani has won a total of six National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards, some of which are for his cinematography, some for his direction, and some awards have also been given to him for parallel cinema. Let us tell you that in 2002, Govind Nihalani ji was honored with Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of the Republic of India.
