Iftekhar Ahmed Sharif: Actors are like clay—they mold into any role given to them. However, some actors leave such a lasting impression with their unique mannerisms and aura that they become synonymous with certain roles. One such iconic actor was Iftikhar Sahab. With his sharp eyebrows, proud forehead, intense eyes, and commanding presence, he became the quintessential police inspector, shrewd lawyer, strict father, or mysterious CID officer.
He was one of the pillars of Indian cinema, having witnessed the industry's evolution firsthand. I had always wanted to meet him.
Iftekhar Ahmed Sharif: A Walk Down Memory Lane
One afternoon, I finally got the chance. I asked, "What were you doing all alone?"
He smiled, "Memories cling to me like a mischievous child, and I embrace them with love. But when reality calls, I gently put them to sleep."
I was fascinated. "Where were you born?" I inquired.
"I was born in Kanpur, near Patkapur, on February 22, 1920. My childhood was full of mischief. I was obsessed with singing and never thought of becoming an actor. My only dream was to be a singer."
Iftekhar Ahmed Sharif's First Step into the Arts
"I completed my matriculation from Christ Church College. Though I wasn't much into studies, I managed good grades. I also had a passion for painting, so my father sent me to Lucknow School of Art. When I returned, he put me to work in his factory to keep me from wandering."
I asked, "How did you enter films?"
"It was sheer fate. HMV was auditioning new singers. My friends forced me to participate. Since I had lived among Bengalis, I spoke fluent Bengali, which impressed them, and they gave me a chance to sing. That’s where I met Hemant Kumar and Talat Mahmood."
"At that time, New Theatres was producing many films. Composer Pankaj Ji noticed me and unexpectedly offered me a lead role. After seeking my father’s permission, I moved to Mumbai."
A Career Takes Flight (Iftekhar Ahmed Sharif)
"A meeting with Ashok Kumar proved to be a turning point. He introduced me to several producers. Though lead roles were mostly taken, I got an important side role in 'Muqaddar'. Gradually, I gained recognition through films like 'Mirza Ghalib', 'Jaagte Raho', and 'Sangam'. The film 'Ittefaq' was my big break, and soon, I was typecast as a police inspector or lawyer."
A Life in Cinema (Iftekhar Ahmed Sharif)
"Do you miss singing?"
"Sometimes. I came to be a singer but ended up as an actor. Now, I barely remember my own songs."
"Any scene that deeply moved you?"
"Yes, in 'Mirza Ghalib', 'Noorie', and 'Nikaah'. Some moments were profoundly touching."
"Past or present—what do you prefer?"
"Every moment is precious. I was Iftikhar yesterday, I am Iftikhar today. But will I be tomorrow? Who knows? But if my admirers shed a tear for me, that will be my true legacy."
