Imran Khan was born on January 13, 1983, in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. His father, Anil Pal, is a software engineer, and his mother, Nuzhat Khan, is a psychologist. Imran's grandfather was a Bengali from Kolkata who married a British woman. His father, an Anglo-Indian of Bengali Hindu descent, studied at IIT Bombay with Mansoor Khan and later worked as a senior manager at Yahoo in California. His mother is Muslim and of Pashtun and Arab descent. She comes from a film family—the daughter of Nasir Hussain, the sister of Mansoor Khan, and a cousin of Aamir Khan. Imran Khan is an American citizen by birth.

When Imran was very young, his parents divorced, and his mother moved to Mumbai with him. In an interview, Imran stated that his stepfather, Raj Zutshi, was a father figure in his life. He attended Bombay Scottish School, but the new environment and changed family circumstances left him feeling uneasy. During this period, he developed a stutter, his academics deteriorated, and he began to suffer from mental stress.

Later, his mother sent him to the Blue Mountain School in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. Initially, he experienced depression there, but gradually recovered. He then attended a Gurukul-like school in the forests of Ooty, where there was no electricity or modern amenities. Students washed their own clothes and even grew some of their own food. Imran later admitted that changing schools frequently made him self-reliant, but also led to a certain loneliness.

He then moved to Sunnyvale, California, where he lived with his father and attended Fremont High School. After completing his degree, he also worked for a time in market research and advertising.
