Born on June 12, 1932, Padmini Ramachandran was not just a great actress but also a trained Bharatanatyam dancer. She ruled the hearts of audiences for more than three decades.
Making her acting debut at the age of 16 with the Hindi film "Kalpana" (1948), Padmini worked in more than 250 films including Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu, and even Russian films. Padmini won people's hearts with her excellent acting for three decades. Apart from her mesmerizing acting, Padmini was also known for her captivating dance.
In her three-decade-long career, Padmini shared the screen with some of the biggest names in Indian cinema like Sivaji Ganesan, M.G. Ramachandran, N.T. Rama Rao and Raj Kapoor.
Padmini won the hearts of Telugu audiences with her captivating performances in classics like "Sampoorna Ramayanam" (1958), "Ambu" (1953), and the iconic "Thillana Mohanambal" (1968).
"Thillana Mohanambal" (1968) is one such classic film in which Padmini played the role of a dancer. This film beautifully depicts the competition between a dancer and a musician. Padmini's dance with Vyjayanthimala in the song "Kannum Kannum Kalanthu" from "Vanjikottai Valiban" in this film is a cult classic.
If we talk about Padmini's Hindi films, audiences loved her performances in "Mera Naam Joker" (1970) and "Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai" (1960), where she shared the screen with the legendary Raj Kapoor.
Beyond the silver screen, Padmini was recognized for her artistic qualities. She received several awards, including the prestigious Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award - South (1990) and the Tamil Nadu State Film Honorary Award - Kalaivanar Award (2000).
In 1961, Padmini married Ramachandran and moved to the United States, prioritizing family life. However, her passion for dance continued. In 1977, she founded the Padmini School of Fine Arts in New Jersey, so that future generations could follow the tradition of Indian classical dance.
On 26 September 2006, Padmini breathed her last at the age of 76 at Apollo Hospital in Chennai.
Padmini Ramachandran's legacy extends far beyond her filmography. She was a gifted actress, a talented dancer, and a passionate teacher who inspired countless people.
