From Dancer to Bollywood Star
Born in 1912, Sehgal's career spanned over eight decades, encompassing dance, acting, and choreography. After studying modern dance in Germany, she returned to India to join Uday Shankar's renowned dance troupe. This marked the beginning of a lifelong love affair with the performing arts.
Eight Decades of Brilliance
In the 1940s, Sehgal transitioned to acting. She graced the stage with esteemed theatre groups like IPTA and Prithvi Theatre, showcasing her versatility. Her film career, equally impressive, included iconic movies like "Neecha Nagar" (considered Indian cinema's first international success at Cannes), "Bhaji on the Beach," "Bend It Like Beckham," and many more. Sehgal's ability to portray a range of characters, from feisty grandmothers to endearing neighbors, won her hearts across generations.
She continued to be active well into her nineties, captivating viewers in films like, ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’, ‘Veer-Zara’, and ‘Saawariya’.

In 2012, Google honored her with a Doodle commemorating the release of "Neecha Nagar" at Cannes. In 2012, she became the first Indian to appear on the long-running British science fiction series "Doctor Who."
