KUNAL RAWAL GAVE THE SUMMER/RESORT 2019 SEASON AT LAKMÉ FASHION WEEK AN INTERESTING FASHION DIRECTION

“Future Past 2019” was the title of Kunal Rawal’s Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2019, when the designer merged tradition with millennial touches and offered an integrated design solution to the men’s wear wardrobe. There was a touch of “Neo Traditionalism”, which was superbly combined to create an exciting wardrobe for the stylish male dresser.

Motifs and silhouettes brought to the fashion charts, a new style direction.  Bringing in a novel concept of lines and dots that interpreted the idea of Morse coding, Kunal also drew inspiration from heritage archives. Tradition came in the form of Indian handlooms that worked really well for the cool hoodies and the comfy kurta over-shirts. A few more craft touches included India’s favourite Bandhani that was seen in innovative cubes and checks designs, instead of the conventional dots.

The Bandhgala came in a variety of options, worn over shirts and kurtas, while the waistcoat too, made an appearance under jackets, over-shirts and kurtas. Sherwanis went unconventional with curved hemlines and the layering of shirt, waistcoat, kurta and trousers was practical. The silhouettes were fitted with tight ankle length trousers, setting a trend for the coming season. The lapel-cum-hoodie shirt, jacket and Bandhgala variations too, were interesting.

The colour card stayed on the masculine track with white, brown, beige, maroon, ivory, deep purple and black. Mild quilting looked good for waistcoats and bundies, while sleeveless long shirts over kurtas offered an Indo-west fusion story. Sparkle appeared for jackets, bundies and sherwanis for evening glamour.

Unique textures were an addition to the garment construction that provided a multi-functional design sensibility for the buyer. The interesting aspect about Kunal’s collection was that the pieces on the ramp could be combined with ones from the designer’s earlier collections, thus giving the wearer multiple ways of dressing.

An element of Bespoke street wear appeared for many of the outfits, which could be added to the millennial groom’s wardrobe in the form of bold prints and the distinct Kunal Rawal’s knotted forms embroidered on the outfits.

Bringing the very fast paced show that offered innumerable styles to the trendy male, it was Bollywood’s hot young star, Aditya Roy Kapur who strode on the ramp in an all-black micro-textured jacket, waistcoat with a hint of dazzle, a hoodie-option shirt and fitted trousers.

Kunal Rawal’s “Future Past 2019” was a fusion of ideal festive wear that could be termed as an anti-trend but multifunctional collection that will allow the wearer to adapt and express his individual style quotient for the coming season with his unique stamp.
