EXCLUSIVE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

1) From what age did you start singing and which was the first instrument you learned?

I started learning how to sing with trained teachers in 2010 after having a dream to sing in Hindi from a young age.

After school I used to sing Bollywood songs into my father's tape recorder and then replay my voice back and listen to myself singing on tape.

2) How did you get into singing and what was the first instrument/first song that you learned?

Singing came to me when I was a little girl so young and I couldn’t speak Hindi but I used to watch Bollywood movies and memorize the song lyrics and sing that entire day.

So it’s been a natural process of self learning by watching idols like Lata ji that allowed me to groom my Hindi accent.

The first instrument I learned or better called played is piano and it was actually when on my childhood’s friend birthday the pianist did not come for some reason.

It was all coincidence but I played it well. Ever since then I continued to play the piano as I enjoyed it so much.

3) Who or what is the inspiration behind your 2nd album ‘Tumhaari’?

My father… He is the one behind my musical endeavours. I dedicate this album to the one who introduced me to music.

Tumhaari is for him and here’s a tribute to the one who gave me existence and taught me to believe in my goals and just go for it. My father’s love for Bollywood is why I exist in the music scene.

4) Who is your role model in singing and why?

Shreya Ghoshal is my role model because her voice is one that is a teacher in itself. I have heard Shreya Ji's songs daily for the last 10 years and found them to be daily lessons for me in between having my lessons with my vocals teachers.

It sounds strange but I don't listen to Shreya Ji as a normal listener. I am listening to her as a student. I love the emotion more than anything in her voice.

5) Old Bollywood music or New Bollywood music, what do you prefer more?

Old. Simply because it was not done for the fame in those days everything was real. It was not about the YT views. It was about the music.

The melodic essence just isn't there that used to be there in the old classics. I don't really know why that is but I guess back in the days it was all real and raw. Unadulterated voices in the studio. One take songs and so things sounded so much more natural than they do today.

6) What is the one major thing that you have learned in your career till date?

The one thing I have learnt is to fight for what you want. There are always going to be hurdles but the biggest one is people telling you that you cannot do something or shouldn't.

I am very fortunate to be working with a team of people who help each other succeed but I came across many people earlier who used to put me and my dreams down and say I was not good enough.

This really knocked my self confidence and I must say if it was not for my determination and strength I would not be a singer today.

7) According to you, how different (rhythm wise, genre wise, lyrics wise) is your 2nd album ‘Tumhaari’ from your first album ‘Woh Pal’?

Tumhaari has mostly upbeat songs and one slow jam. ‘Woh Pal’ was the exact opposite. Tumhaari is very special because I wanted to try something totally different.

I got to work with DJ Shadow Dubai and experiment more with my current producer Atif Ali.

Tumhaari has a lot of hard work and emotions involved, it says a lot about me, what I was going through as each song has its own special story behind it.

The lyrics are deeper than before. My accent and my voice have evolved. When I look back to my previous album I can clearly see that I’m moving towards a better and newer version of myself with the support of such dedicated fans.

I owe a lot to producers Atif Ali, Tabraiz Haroon and DJ Shadow for making ‘Tumhaari’ possible and experimenting with me on the sounds we have not heard before.

8) How does it feel to be the only Indian Pop singer to release 2 albums in one year?

It feels incredible to have this achievement. Most singers in our industry don't release albums and I feel like that’s a shame.

I think singles are a nice way to test what fans like but Album's show how serious you are about the field of music.

I have now started to work on my 3rd Album and I really am excited to see what the journey unfolds.

9) How do you manage your daily activities (singing practice work, me time, house duties) during the lockdown time?

Lockdown had been very challenging in UK for me as my music producers and team was all in Dubai and we had virtual meetings every day.

I used to practice singing in the early morning and that’s how I woke up my mother every day.

I am very conscious about my skincare and diet so during pandemic I was more able to take care of myself being at home.

When Covid hit me I increased my vitamin intake. House duties have been the same. None existent I really hate cleaning of any kind. I

’m not a kitchen person but I enhanced my kitchen skills during this time. I love cooking yummy maple syrup gluten free pancakes.

10) Anything you would like to say to your fans around the world in this tough time of Covid-19?

I want everyone to realise that our time on the planet is precious. We aren't here forever and neither are our loved ones.

We really need to be grateful for each waking moment we have and be here for one another in this crisis we are all in. Together we can help the world overcome this.Arzutra
