Bombay Rose Directed By Gitanjali Rao To Play At Toronto Film Festival After The Worldwide Premiere In Venice

Cinestaan Film Company takes great pleasure to announce that after opening International Critics Week at the Venice International Festival, Gitanjali Rao’s BOMBAY ROSE will premiere in the Contemporary World Cinema Strand at the Toronto Film Festival 2019 on the 7^th September 2019.  Cameron Bailey director of the festival “It's a beautiful evocation of love and a full immersion in both its rich setting and the magic of Indian cinema.”Bombay Rose is the story of a flower seller who has to make the choice between protecting her family or allowing herself to fall in love.  This touching story is set on the streets of Mumbai (Bombay) and moves from real life to fantasy, accompanied by much loved Bollywood songs from the cinema halls. Painted frame by frame, for which Gitanjali is famed, Bombay Rose is a chronicle of the people who migrate from small towns, seeking minimal life in the maximum city.

The festival has an incredible energy and we really look forward to the response”. Bombay Rose is the long awaited feature debut of India’s leading animator Gitanjali Rao.  Gitanjali’s five animated short films, Blue, Orange, Printed Rainbow, Chai and TrueLoveStory  have been to over 150 film festivals and received 30 awards. ‘Printed Rainbow’ won three awards in Cannes Critic’s Week 2006 where it premiered and was short-listed for the Oscars in 2008. Bombay Rose will open Venice Film Festival’s International Critic’s Week on the 29^th August 2019, before its North American premiere in Toronto on the 7^th September 2019.

Produced by Anand Mahindra and Rohit Khattar and financed by Cinestaan Film Company (who also recently executive produced the 3 Academy Award nominated ‘Cold War’), Bombay Rose has been written, designed and directed by Gitanjali Rao. The film is in co-production with Film d’Ici and was delivered at Mumbai based PaperBoat Animation Studios. Working creatively alongside Gitanjali was acclaimed sound designer P M Satheesh.
