‘Chumbak’ Bags ‘Sant Tukaram Best International Marathi Film’ Award At 17th PIFF

The official film festival of Maharashtra- Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) concluded today with a huge response from film buffs for over 8 day

The official film festival of Maharashtra- Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) concluded today with a huge response from film buffs for over 8 days. This year in PIFF, the most acclaimed award named ‘Government of Maharashtra Sant Tukaram Best International Marathi Film’ award is bagged by the movie ‘Chumbak’ directed by Sandeep Modi. While the audience most voted for the movie ‘Dithee’ directed by Sumitra Bhave and made it an Audience’s Choice.

Dr. Jabbar Patel, Director, PIFF, Ravi Gupta, Secretary, Samar Nakhate, Satish Alekar, Makarand Sathe, Abhijit Randive and Abhijit Deshpande, Selection Committee Members, Shrinivasa Santhanam, Program Director were present among the dignitaries.In the concluding ceremony of PIFF 2019, Sumitra Bhave was awarded with the Best Director Award given by Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Chitrapat Mahamandal, for her movie ‘Dithee’. Joseph Israel Laban, B. Lenin, Thorsten Schütte Sumitra Bhave and Meghraj Rajebhosale.

‘Sant Tukaram Best International Marathi Film Award’ consists of R. 5 Lacks which is shared between director and producer of the film. Another prestigious award given in PIFF, the ‘Government of Maharashtra Prabhat Best International Film’ award is bagged by the French- Kurdish movie ‘Girls of the Sun’ directed by Eva Husson. This award consists of Rs. 10 Lakhs which is also shared between the director and the producers.

In World Competition category, the movie ‘A Translator’ directed by directors Rodrigo Barriuso and Sebastian Barriuso, became Audience’s Choice. The Barriuso brothers also bagged the Prabhat Beat International Film Director award for the same film. This award consists of Rs.5 Lakhs.

The awards given by Akhil Bhartiya Marathi Chitrapat Mahamandal consisting of Rs 25,000 each was also a highlight of the valedictory function of PIFF. These awards were distributed in presence of Meghraj Rajebhosale, President of the organization.

 In the closing ceremony of PIFF 2019, the movie ‘Chumbak’ bagged ‘Sant Tukaram Best International Marathi Film’ award, while Director Sumitra Bhave, Actress Devika Daftardar, Writer-Actor Swanand Kirkire won the awards given by Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Chitrapat Mahamandal for Best Director, Best Female Actor and Best Male Actor respectively. The Best Marathi Film Director award is given to Sumitra Bhave, who is Director of the movie ‘Dithee’, The Best Actress Award is bagged by Devika Daftardar, Actress of the movie ‘Naal’. Best Male Actor award was bagged by Swanand Kirkire for the movie ‘Chumbak’. Best Screenplay Award is also given to Saurabh Bhave and Sandeep Modi for the screenplay of  ‘Chumbak’, while the Best Cinematography Award is bagged by the Cinematographer Dhananjay Kulkarni for the movie ‘Dithee’.

As every year, this year too, the panel of juries of the festival had big names from world cinema, like B. Lenin, veteran Editor and Director (India), Christer Holmgren, Actor and Director (Sweden), Daniela Ciancio, Costume Designer (Italy), Joseph Israel Laban, Filmmaker (Philippines), Kamlesh Pandey, Film Writer (India), Prasanna Vithanage, Director (Sri Lanka), Shabnam Gholikhani, Actor (Iran) and Thorsten Schütte, Cinematographer, Editor and Director (Germany).Juries Joseph Israel Laban, Thorsten Schütte and B. This year, seven Marathi films- ‘Mulshi Pattern’, ‘Naal’, ‘Khatla Bitla’, ‘Bhonga’, ‘Chumbak’, ‘Bodhi’ and ‘Dithee’ were shortlisted in the Marathi Competition category at PIFF. While the World Competition Category included the movies ‘Sly’, ‘The Red Phallus’, ‘Earth’, ‘A Translator’, ‘Too Much Info Clouding Over My Head’, ‘My Own Good’, ‘The Man With The Magic Box’, ‘Domestique’,  ‘Girls Of The Sun’, ‘From Where We’ve Fallen’ ,‘Donbass’, ‘Our Time’,  ‘Poisonous Roses’ and ‘Ee Ma Yove’.

The MIT- SFT Human Spirit Award which is introduced this year itself, is given to Director Pippo Mezzapesa for the movie ‘My Own Good’.

The PIFF Special Award instituted by Maria Prochazakova for the Final Year Student of Direction from FTII is given to Sanskruti Chatopadhyay.
