Biwi No. 1 Turns 25: Unexpected Cast, Unforgettable Comedy

On hearing the name 'Biwi No. 1', a familiar tune starts playing in our minds. Directed by the king of slapstick comedy, David Dhawan, this film is still as much liked by the people as it was liked 25 years ago when this film was released. This film, released in 1999, was a remake of the Tamil hit film 'Saathi Leelavathi'.

Salman Khan, and Karisma Kapoor Star in Govinda's Rejected Role Film

The story of this film is as interesting as its casting is even more interesting. Govinda, the hero of most of David Dhawan's films, was David's first choice for this film too, but his role was later given to Salman Khan. Similarly, the character of Pooja, who was played by Karisma Kapoor, was rejected by heroines like Juhi Chawla, Aishwarya Rai, and Raveena Tandon. Manisha Koirala, who was in the news for playing the character of Mallikajaan in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's series 'Heeramandi', refused to do this film for some reason, after which this role fell into Karisma Kapoor's lap.

There was a similar story about every character in this film, whether it was Anil Kapoor's role of Lakhan for which the first choice was South superstar Kamal Haasan who refused to do the film due to lack of dates. Similarly, after Rambha refused to play Lakhan's wife, Lovely, this role went to Tabu.

Now if we talk about the character of Rupali for which Sonali Bendre was the first choice of the makers this role fell into the lap of Sushmita Sen. This role of hers made her a superstar in the industry overnight. The audience liked the glamorous style of her character in the film so much that for a few moments, they probably forgot that Rupali's character is of another woman.

Despite so much change in the cast, this film did wonders at the box office. With a gross collection of 52 crores, the film proved to be a super hit at the box office. The audience appreciated every character in the film. Every character tickled the audience, whether it was Pooja's innocence or Lovely's habit of doubting her husband, and Lakhan's efforts to bring his friend on the right path by supporting him.

The soundtrack of this film was composed by Anu Malik, every song of which is a chartbuster, whether it is 'Chunri Chunri', 'Haye Haye Mirchi', 'Jungle Hai' that forces the audience to dance or the emotional song 'Mujhe Maaf Karna', every song of this film is liked even today.

'Biwi No. 1' is a complete masala film that has a perfect blend of romance, comedy, and emotion. Even today, after 25 years, this film is successful in making people laugh and cry.
