Declaring it as her most ambitious project to date, four-time National Award-winning actress Kangana Ranaut is geared up to create history by essaying the role of former Indian Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi in the upcoming period political drama ‘Emergency’. Showcasing the actress’s commitment to delving into the past, the film promises to provide a genuine and honest insight into history. Labeled as a mega-budget depiction of a highly controversial event in Indian democracy, ‘Emergency’ is set to highlight the infamous July 1972 Simla Agreement between Indira Gandhi and the former President of Pakistan, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

Simla Agreement: Kangana's 'Emergency' Insight

The Simla Agreement also referred to as The Shimla Agreement, was signed by the Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi and the President of Pakistan, Mr. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto on 2 July 1972 in Shimla, India. The agreement marked the formal end of the 1971 India-Pakistan war. It aimed to establish peace, requiring India to withdraw forces, addressing the Kashmir issue, and fostering improved relations. The accord facilitated the return of seized land, with India giving back over 13,000 km of land to Pakistan, but controversy continues to linger in India’s political history. Written and Directed by Kangana Ranaut, ‘Emergency’ also features Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik in pivotal roles. Produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films, the film’s music is orchestrated by Sanchit Balhara with screenplay and dialogues by Ritesh Shah. ‘Emergency’ is scheduled to hit the screens on June 14, 2024.
