Death Anniversary Special: SUNIL DUTT KI YAADEIN ( 1964) KI KUCH ANOKI YAADEIN JO BHOOLAYE JA NAHI SAKTE.... BY ALI PETER JOHN

In the early 60s Hindi films were all a blend of melodramatic , social , historical and action films ( Dara Singh had started a trend of making films with wrestling as the the central attraction ) and there were all kinds of films being made , some with sense and most without even making an effort to make sense - Ali Peter John

Hollywood films were the only one that gave genuine entered to the masses who lapped them up in regular shows matinee shows.

Sunil ( Balraj ) Sunil Dutt was one of the Indian actors who had started making headway in Hindi films and was showing signs of the a man who was willing to take any risks and take up any daring roles even if they were rejected by other leading actors. He had also taken his first steps as a filmmaker and had shown that he could take on any subjects and do full justice to then .

One evening, he thought of a story he had heard from a friend. It was a story that couldn't be made into a film, many of his friends and well-wishers told him, but the more they discouraged him, the more he was ditermined to make the film based on the story he had heard and the first person to support him in this "madness of a film" was his wife, Nargis who decided to support him all the way.

He gathered a small team of the best technicians and the highly talented music director like Vasant Desai and took a risky decision to produce, direct and act in the film.

The shooting began in Bombay and the entire industry kept saying " ki Dutt Sahab pagal ho gaye " but Dutt Sahab was one man who never cared for what other people said and did exactly what he believed in .

Yadein was about middle age man who returns home one evening only to find his wife missing with their three children .

The rest of the film is all about a man who has locked himself in his apartment and lives a very strange life in which he lives out the past and the present of his life with his family.

The man, Anil Khanna played by Sunil Dutt is one of the most outstanding performances in the history of Indian films and I still find it difficult and I am even very shocked that his performance as not been given the recognised and the due for his doubly hard work of making the film and acting in it.

The highlights of "Yaadein " are how Anil Khanna ( Sunil Dutt ) lives out his life at different times, with his wife, with his children and with his many fluctuations of moods and his eccentricities and his losing of his temper and his raging arguments and even fights with his wife.

How Anil Khanna comes in touch with his memories and reacts to them when he is all alone is what makes " Yaadein" unique, emotional, real and even a slice of life.

The film has fleeting glimpses of Nargis and her scenes with her reel life husband, Anil Khanna, there is even a song which plays in the background , which is composed by Vasat Desai.

Sunil Dutt does all that he says and all that he does only with the expressions of his face, his eyes and his hands. There is so much happening in Yaadein on a very high voltage of high drama, but what is the greatest thing about "Yaadein" is that there is not a single word spoken by any character throughout the film.

Yet was something of a miracle of Hindi cinema in the 60s. Films were made without songs, but no big and comercial film had been made without the characters speaking any dailogue.

Yaadein had the satisfaction of being an entry in the Guinness Book Of World Record. It was entered at the Cannes Film Festival.

Sunil Dutt won the Padmashree ( I don't know whether it was for Yaadein) but he certainly deserved every major award in the country, even if it was just for his taking the risk to make a successful experiment in film entertainment like "Yaadein"

In the 90s, Kamal Haasan tried to make a silent film with his favourite director Singeetham Srinivas Roa, there was much more than the technology used in Yaadein, but the film could not manage the same impact as Sunil Dutt's "Yaadein "did.

Later Subhash ghai made his own "Yaadein" , but expect for the outstanding performance of Hrithik Roshan, there are no other yaadeins to remember about this film made by the great showman

KUCH YAADEIN BAHUT HI YAADGAR HOTI HAI, AUR AISI YAADEIN JAB BHI YAAD AAYEGI SUNIL DUTT KI "YAADEIN" ZAROOR AAYEGI AUR MERA DAAVA AUR YAKIN DONO HAI KI SUNIL DUTT KI YAADEIN JAISI FILM AAJ KE VFX AUR CAFE BAITHKAR LIKHNE WAALE AUR KHAYAALI COFFEE PEENEWAALE YAADEIN JAISI FILM SHAAYAD HI KABHI BANA PAAYENGE JAB TAK SURAJ , CHAND AUR INTERNET RAHEGA, DUTT SAHAB AAPKA NAAM AUR KAAM RAHEGA
