That one tight blow dealt by Puneet Issar which had knocked out Amitabh Bachchan during the shooting of Manmohan Desai's "Coolie" on the sets in Bangalore in July 1982 , had created panick and shock-waves not only all over the country but even in different parts of the world - Ali Peter John

The doctors at the St Philomena's Hospital in Bangalore had no hopes of saving the grievously wonded Amitabh and it was decided to fly him to Bombay and get him admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital and the seats of an Air India Aircraft were taken off to make place to fly the injured Amitabh to Bombay in a lying position and in an unconscious state .

The arrangements for the transportation of the "body" of Amitabh was made by the well known filmmaker , S. Raamnathan who had first directed Amitabh in "Bombay to Goa" which was the film that changed the fortunes of Amitabh.

Amitabh's "body " was received at the Santacruz Airport by his favourite filmmakers like Prakash Mehra , Manmohan Desai , Yash Johar and Mukul Anand.

His condition was critical and he was rushed to the Breach Candy Hospital and was admitted in room number 302 and immediately put on a ventilator.

That was the beginning of prayers in all religions made for his recovery. Priests , mullahs and pandits pleaded with people of all religions to pray for the recovery of Amitabh.

He was diagnosed for peritonitis , a major disorder of the liver and all his major organs and systems well in a state of disorder which the doctors opined would be very dangerous to his health .

There was a health bulletin issued by the hospital informing people about his latest condition and this bulletin was issued to the hundreds of media personalities which carried news items about Amitabh's latest condition every day .

Amitabh's condition kept deteriotinng and doctors were worried because of their not being able to find solutions and the pressure of the thousands of people thronging the hospital on all sides was only making them more nervous and even scared . They has not faced so much of tension in their entire careers .

A team of doctors headed by Dr Farokh Udwadia , Dr S R Shah and Dr Jayant Barwe were put in charge of the special case of Amitabh .

The treatment continued for several days and everyday there was a new and deadly rumour about his health which kept on growing worse .

The Amitabh story took a drastic turn when his health failed him dangerously and Mrs Indira Gandhi flew down from Delhi to the hospital to pay a visit to the dying son of her friend , Mrs Teji Bachchan and had flown back to Delhi after consoling Mrs Bachchan.

Two days later , Amitabh was put on the clinically dead list and his friends were asked to make preparations for the funeral . The prayers all over grew more intense .

His producers from the south walked on there heads around wells in their attempts to beg of bird to save Amitabh's life .

Men carrying coconuts on their heads and walking from Ahmedabad to the hospital was a common sight and the prayers in churches , temples and mosques kept growing stronger.

And at around 11 in the night , Jaya decided to walk bare feet from the hospital to the Siddhivinayak temple and walked back to the hospital .

And when she entered Amitabh's room , she saw one of his toes moving and she screamed saying , " No , he is not dead, he can not die, he is alive and all the doctors treating Amitabh came back to Amitabh's room and started an intense attempt to revive him , but their was no response.

Then the head of the team of doctors , Dr Farokh Udwadia ordered his fellow doctors to pump Amitabh's body with Cortizone injections .

His fellow doctors felt he had gone mad as injecting a serious patient with Cortizone injections could be fatal, but Dr Udwadia stuck by his decision and Amitabh gradually showed signs of coming back to life and within the next few hours , Amitabh was declared fit enough to continue his fight against death which he continued fighting till he was discharged from hospital on August 2, 1982 .

He was all skeleton and bones and couldnt even stand but his spirits were revived when hundreds of people along the streets welcomed him with placards reading , "welcome home" .

He was asked to rest at home for days and came out only for 2 minutes in the evening to wave out to the massive crowds waiting to have a glimpse of him.

He shifted from Prateeksha to a holiday home in Madh Island on the advice of his doctors and started shooting for "Coolie "from the very scene in which Punnet Issar had knocked him and injured him seriously and that was the beginning of a new life for Amitabh which continuous to this day .
