After its premiere at NSCI DOME in Mumbai, 'Disco Dancer: The Musical,' a Saregama and Suniel Shetty's presentation, went on to become a runaway hit. The magnificent stage adaptation of B Subhash's 1982 global hit even left the original disco dancer himself, the one and only Mithun Chakraborty overwhelmed. Bappi Lahiri's family grew emotional as well and conveyed that this was possibly the best tribute to the late music director. The premiere was a star-studded affair and the guests included director B Subhash, Anu Malik, Arshad Warsi, Sunny Leone with husband Daniel Weber, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Sunidhi Chauhan and Tanuja Mukherjee among many other celebrities.
In the shows that followed, fans too lined up in droves to watch the musical that had already mesmerised audiences in London's West End with its perfect recreation of the aspirational story of a street dancer who defies the odds to become a beloved disco king.
Fans across generations grooved to Bappi Lahiri's infectious chartbusters like 'I am a Disco Dancer,' 'Jimmy Jimmy,' 'Auva Auva', 'Yaad Aa Raha Hai' and many other songs that have been reimagined for stage perfectly by Salim Sulaiman. They also cheered the punch lines and danced in the aisles during the climactic showdown between Jimmy and Sam.
A very special memory was created when children supported by NGO’s like SarVAA, Rotary Club, AngelXpress Foundation and Angels Link Foundation watched the show with stars in their eyes and were thrilled beyond words to see a street child turn into a rockstar.
Vikram Mehra, Manging Director -Saregama India Ltd said: "Saregama’s endeavour is to constantly innovate and challenge status quo. We first try Understand customer needs, basis which we create the best-in-line product and then market it passionately. First it was Carvaan then Yoodlee films and now Live Events. End result has always been consumer delight and commercial success. The response to 'Disco Dancer-The Musical' has been phenomenal and we will be taking the show across the country and abroad.”
Music director Salim Merchant adds, "Bollywood's disco era was defined by Bappi da and to be able to meet him while working on this show was just an unforgettable experience. Even though he unfortunately passed away before the show could be staged, his presence could be felt in the love that surrounded us all during the premiere and the shows that followed. And of course, to see Mithun da in the audience was beyond thrilling."
Directed and choreographed by Rajeev Goswami, the musical with its stunning attention to detail and picture-perfect production values took audiences back to the unforgettable 80s. Rajeev says, "For me, putting together this musical was the journey of a lifetime as it took me back to the uproarious cinema of the 80s and gave me an opportunity to pay a tribute to the stalwarts of that era. To have Mithun da and Bappi da's family in the audience was a dream come true and the audience's response was just phenomenal and beyond words. Also, I would like to give a huge shout-out to the phenomenal cast and crew and the efforts that they have put into this journey."
The musical boasted engaging performances by Arjun Tanwar who played Jimmy with elan, Varun Tiwari who evoked the bitter villainy of Sam Oberoi and Tia Kar who revived the memories of the glamourous Rita Oberoi played originally by Kim.
