Dr Bhupendra Hazarika Honoured With India's Highest Honour, The Bharat Ratna

The renowned Assamese playback singer, lyricist, musician, singer, poet and film-maker, Dr Bhupendra Hazarika was one of the three receipients of the Bharat Ratna (posthumously) which were presented by President Ram Kovind on August 8. The former President of India, Pranab Mukherjee and Nanaji Deshmukh (posthumously) were the other two. Dr Hazarika was closely connected with Assamese literature as a well-known poet and had made and scored music for several Assamese and Bengali films was a legend in places like Assam and West Bengal. He was also associated with Hindi films and had scored music for three films of Atmaram, younger brother of Guru Dutt and all the films of Kalpana Lajmi who was the niece of Guru Dutt. All the three, Atmaram, Dr Hazarika himself and Kalpana are no more a part of the living. Among the noted Hindi films he scored music for were “Ek Pal",“Rudaali",“Darmiyaan: In Between",“Gaja Gamini",“Kyon?"and “Aarop" which was the first Hindi film, directed by Atmaram with Vinod Khanna and Saira Banu in the leads that he scored music for.
