Mimoh Chakraborty on Khakee, Nepotism & Personal Struggles
Recently, actor Mimoh Chakraborty, who was seen in the crime-thriller web series Khakee: The Bengal Chapter, won the hearts of the audience with his powerful performance. The series, set in Kolkata, explores the complex relationships between power, corruption, and crime. After the success of the series, Mimoh gave an interview to the media, where he opened up about being chosen for the role, his character, his father’s influence, nepotism, and his personal struggles. Let’s see what he had to say
- Your web series ‘Khakee: The Bengal Chapter’ is based in Bengal. How much do you know about Bengal? How close is Bengal to you?
My father, Mithun Chakraborty, is from Bengal. Whenever he visited Kolkata, I always had the chance to accompany him. The people of Bengal are very kind, and they have a great love for my father. Now, with the Bengal-based series, I am receiving the same love and respect from them, and I am truly happy about it. When I shot in Kolkata, it didn’t feel like I was away from home; I felt completely at home.
- What character do you play in the series? Tell us about your role.
In Khakee: The Bengal Chapter, I play a police officer named Himel Majumdar, who has been in the force for 10-15 years. Over the years, he has seen the highs and lows of the job, and he knows all the internal workings and politics of the police force.
- When you first found out that you were selected for the series, how excited were you? What was going on in your mind?
I got this role after an audition. Before this, I was doing a show for Amazon Mini, Revolution: Padhai Ki Ladai. My co-actors, Gaurav Sharma and Happy, were my friends. We would share casting calls with each other. Happy told me about Khakee, and his friend, the casting director of the series, helped me get the audition. After sending my audition, I got a call back 10 days later, and they invited me for a meeting. When I went there, I met Deepak Sir (a close associate of Neeraj Sir). At first, they told me that the casting was already done, but I told them that I really wanted to work with Neeraj Sir, no matter what role it was. After a few days, I got a call back saying that I had been selected for the series. But I want to make it clear that my father had no hand in me getting this role.
- What is your view on nepotism, especially when you’ve said that you and your co-actors help each other?
Nepotism is a very wrong word. When people say "nepo baby" or "nepotism," I can say from my own experience that I have never faced any inconvenience. Everything I’ve done has been based on my hard work and auditions. I’ve also informed my friends about casting calls, and they’ve done the same for me. So, this is completely anti-nepotism. The people who say that it’s all about family connections are wrong. It’s all about the willingness to work hard and giving the right audition.
- What challenges did you face while working on this show?
The biggest challenge during the show was fully understanding my character and expressing its complexities. My character, Himel Majumdar, has several twists and turns, and playing him authentically was a big challenge. However, I tried to perform with full sincerity, and I hope the audience will appreciate it.
- What lessons have you learned from your father that reflect in your work today?
My father taught me that when working, you need to fully immerse yourself in the character. But when the work is over, you must return to yourself. This is very important, as in acting, switching on and off is crucial. I also learned from my parents that who we are is determined by our actions, not by any privileges.
- Do you ever seek acting tips from your father, especially when you feel nervous about a scene?
Yes, my father taught me early on that an actor should always act honestly. He told me that as long as you play your character with sincerity, it will reflect on camera. If you’re only playing the role because of your name, the character will not come through. But if you act as Himel Majumdar, the character will truly appear. He taught me that every shot should be given with honesty. When you’re between action and cut, you are only that character.
- Do you ever feel that the pressure of your father’s big name weighs on you, and do you think you can ever reach his level?
Honestly, I can never reach my father’s level because he is Mithun Chakraborty. He has a distinct identity as an actor, and I can never match his decades-long career and the contribution he has made. At home, he is my father, and I will always cherish that relationship. I just want to be Mimoh Chakraborty. Now, I focus on my hard work, and my attention is on how I can better myself.
- When will the shooting for ' Haunted 2' be finished?
The shooting for Haunted 2 is almost 90% complete. There’s just one final schedule left, and it’s expected that the film will be released in the middle of this year.
- What are your memories of Bengal, especially the food?
Bengal’s food is truly amazing. Fish and rice are very popular there, and I love fish. There are also many other delicious dishes. One of my favorites is the fresh kachori and aloo bhaji that you get at small shops in Kolkata in the morning. It’s a special breakfast, and once you eat it, you won’t want anything else. The sweets like sondesh and rasgulla are famous, but the baked rasgulla tastes extraordinary. And, of course, I always enjoy Kolkata biryani.
- Is there any place in Bengal you still want to visit?
Yes, there are many places in Bengal I want to visit. Although I’ve already been to many, I still want to spend more time with the culture and people of Bengal. I also enjoy spending time at my father’s house.
- Apart from your father, which other actor do you draw inspiration from?
I really admire Hrithik Roshan. I believe he is complete in every aspect.
- You have an interest in scriptwriting as well. Will we see Hrithik Roshan in one of your films?
Absolutely, I’d love for us to have a dance number together.
- What upcoming projects do you have?
In the coming time, I will be seen in Haunted 2 with Vikram Bhatt. I have also given auditions for two more projects and am waiting for a callback.
- What would you like to say to your fans?
I want to thank all my fans. I hope they continue to shower me with love and support.
