The Bombay High Court was today informed that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has rejected the plea for certification by makers of a movie titled "Ajey: The Untold Story of a Yogi," based on a book written on the life of UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Bombay HC Issues Notice to CBFC Over 'Ajey' Film Delay

Samrat Cinematics, the producer of Ajey: The Untold Story of a Yogi raised serious concerns over the Central Board of Film Certification's (CBFC) handling of the certification process. The movie was rejected on the very grounds cited earlier by the Board—with no meaningful discussion, specific scene references, or suggested edits provided—making resolution seem out of reach.

Samrat Cinematics represented by Advocates Naphade, Satatya Anand, and Nikhil Aradhe cited in front of the court that as per the Certification Rules of 2024, the CBFC must clearly specify objectionable scenes or dialogues, thereby allowing filmmakers to address them directly. The bench, comprising Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Dr. Neela Gokhale, admonished the Board’s vague approach: “These are not reasons. This isn't as per the rules. Why don’t you give them the grounds for rejection? By August 11, you tell them what the objectionable scenes and dialogues are.”Responding to this direction, on August 7, 2025, the Bombay High Court ordered the CBFC to convene a Revising Committee. This committee is required to review the film and provide specific recommendations:

  • Deadline for CBFC: Share objectionable scenes and suggested edits by August 11, 2025.
  • Filmmakers' response: Decide on agreeing to the modifications by August 12, 2025.
  • Next court appearance: Scheduled for August 14, 2025.

It is to be noted that several films previously held up by the CBFC—often without substantive reasons—were later approved by courts, highlighting the importance of procedural fairness.

Of particular relevance, films featuring high-profile public figures—including Prime Ministers and Chief Ministers—have received certification in the past: PM Narendra Modi (2019), Mai Hoon Atal (2024), Dharamveer (2022), Thalaivi (2021), Thackeray (2019), Yatra (2019), and notably The UP Files—a film depicting Yogi Adityanath—which was cleared by the CBFC in 2024.
