Akshay Oberoi on Gay Roles: Known for his different and challenging characters, actor Akshay Oberoi recently spoke openly about the need for representation and inclusion in the Indian entertainment industry. Sharing his experience of playing a gay character in the web series Inside Edge Season 3, Akshay said that Bollywood still does not openly accept the LGBTQ+ community.
Speaking from his heart, Akshay Oberoi said,
"Bollywood may not openly accept it, but the most love and fanbase we get is from the queer community, and we should accept this. As an artist, these people have been a great support system for us. I never had any difference with the sexual identity of my character. For me, every human being's story matters, and every human being deserves to be portrayed on screen."
In Inside Edge 3, Akshay played the role of a cricketer who is gay but keeps his identity a secret. The sensitivity and depth with which he acted in this role was greatly appreciated. This role not only touched people's hearts, but also helped in breaking the stereotypes in the society.
Akshay further said, "I was neither afraid nor hesitant to play that character. Rather, playing such an emotional and deeply conflicted character was a satisfying experience for me. Usually, it is easy to play hero-type roles, but when a character challenges the thinking of society, you grow not only as an actor but also as a human being. Everyone deserves to feel comfortable with their identity."
At a time when representation and authentic inclusion are being increasingly talked about in the Indian entertainment industry, Akshay Oberoi is one of the few mainstream actors who not only plays such characters but also openly talks about giving recognition to such voices.
