Rajan Shahi Credits Mother Deepa Shahi for Anupamaa’s Success

When Rajan Shahi embarked on his journey as a producer, little did he know that the driving force behind his success would be his mother, Deepa Shahi. The story of Anupamaa is not just a television show but a testament to the unyielding faith and selflessness of a mother who gave everything she had to support her son’s dreams.

Years ago, as Rajan Shahi dreamed of creating impactful stories through his production house, he faced a daunting challenge—raising funds to bring his vision to life. Unbeknownst to him, his mother quietly made a decision that would change everything. Deepa Shahi sold the only security she had, a plot of land in Noida, and handed the proceeds to Shahi’s associate, asking him to channel the money into the budding production house.

When the concept of Anupamaa was first proposed—a show centered around the life of a selfless mother—many doubted its potential. Channel questioned whether such a story would resonate with audiences in a market increasingly driven by glamorous, fast-paced narratives. But he was undeterred.  “I was certain that no one could tell this story better than I could. Anupamaa was a story waiting to be told.”

For Rajan Shahi, casting was paramount. His first choice was Rupali Ganguly, a talented actress he had worked with before. With a team of seasoned actors, he took the leap of faith, launching Anupamaa at a time when the world was reeling from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.  “COVID made us all realize the value of mothers and wives—the women who silently toil day and night for their families, often without a word of thanks. Anupamaa became a voice for them.”

The gamble paid off. Anupamaa not only struck a chord with audiences but also defied industry norms. It proved that television could thrive in a world dominated by OTT platforms, becoming a beacon of hope for an industry struggling to find its footing post-pandemic.

The success of Anupamaa also marked a special milestone for the Shahi family. The production house, Shahi Productions, was officially co-led by Deepa Shahi as the primary producer, with Rajan Shahi as the secondary producer—a symbolic gesture acknowledging her role in its inception. For the Shahi family, storytelling runs deep. With a 95-year legacy in the entertainment industry, starting from legendary P. Jairaj to the present day, their contribution continues to evolve. Ishika Shahi, carrying the torch forward, produced Namaste America, a prequel to Anupamaa, further enriching the show’s narrative universe. Today, as Anupamaa continues to win hearts, Rajan Shahi often reflects on the journey that brought him here. If Anupamaa has touched lives, it’s because it was born from the purest place of love and inspiration.
