The journey from the streets of Delhi to the glamorous world of Mumbai is never easy. But when intentions are pure and the goal is strong, the path somehow finds you. This quote fits perfectly with film actor Rajkummar Rao. He has explored every genre in his career—be it the comedy-horror film Stree or the serious biopic Shahid.  Currently, he is busy promoting his new comedy film Bhool Chuk Maaf.

Bhool Chuk Maaf Actor Interview: Genre & Growth

Currently, he is busy promoting his new comedy film Bhool Chuk Maaf. In a recent conversation, he opened up about the film’s theme, working across genres, the changing trends in film promotions, his creative relationship with Maddock Films, and the challenges of portraying varied characters. Let’s hear what he had to say...

  • You're exploring many new genres lately. With this creative shift, how do you view the direction of your career?

I feel truly blessed. So many people come to Mumbai with dreams of becoming actors, and if God chose me for this path, I am deeply grateful. Since my first film, I’ve made a conscious effort to never get typecast or limit myself to one kind of role.

  • In several of your films, your characters are seen struggling to secure a government job. Since your father was in the government sector, did you ever feel any personal or family pressure to pursue that path?

(Laughs) No, I never had that pressure because I had already decided during school that I wanted to act and be in films. But I do understand the significance of a government job in our country.

In Bhool Chuk Maaf, there’s even a scene where the girl’s father says, “Bring a government job in two months, and the girl is yours.” That’s how valuable it is in Indian households.

  • In your film, the Haldi (turmeric) ceremony keeps repeating. Have you ever personally experienced a moment where you felt something had happened before — like déjà vu?

Yes, it has happened to me, and I think many people have experienced it. There's a term for it—déjà vu—but our film isn’t about that. It’s about a time loop. The protagonist is stuck on the 29th — the day of his Haldi — and every time he wakes up, it's still the 29th. But yes, in real life, I’ve had one or two moments where I felt, "Wait, I’ve experienced this before."

  • These days, film promotions seem limited — most makers only visit a few cities. But you’re travelling across the country. How do you see this experience? Is it just promotion, or a way to genuinely connect with people?

Meeting people in person, hearing their feedback directly — it's a wonderful experience. Only when you interact with audiences in real time can you truly gauge their reaction to your trailer.
You won’t get that kind of connection sitting on Instagram.

  • When a talented actor like Wamiqa praises your performance, do you see your craft as a natural gift or something developed over time through experience?

I definitely believe it’s the result of consistent effort and experience. Doing the work daily, understanding each scene deeply, getting into the layers of a character — it all sharpens your skill.

I try to learn something new from every film I do.

  • You’ve had a long relationship with Maddock Films. How has this creative partnership evolved over time?

Our journey began with Raabta in 2017, where I had a small role. Then came Stree in 2018, which was a turning point in my career. That film also strengthened my creative connection with Dinesh Vijan. We share a similar vision. Dinesh is committed to improving every stage of the film — whether it’s script, casting, or promotions. I really appreciate his honesty and passion toward filmmaking.

  • Was there any particular role in your career that made you go, “Wow, I can do this too”? Something that changed the way you saw yourself as an actor?

That happens with almost every role! But some are truly challenging. For example, Srikanth (2024) or Bose — these were tough because I didn’t have a personal reference point for those lives. I hadn’t lived what they lived. So portraying them was difficult but extremely rewarding.

  • You also came to Delhi for the promotion of your film. How did it feel to return? Are there any memories attached to the city that keep drawing you back?

It felt amazing. Of course, the vibe of the city has changed a lot compared to when I was growing up. But my heart still belongs to Delhi. I spent the first 21 years of my life here. I did a lot of theatre at Mandi House.

There are beautiful memories from ITO to Mandi House — every corner of that route is etched in my mind. I know that stretch like the back of my hand.
