Devi discovered herself stuck up in the charms of Hassan, who was defined by fans of the era, as breathtakingly handsome and successful.   From Bombay Talkies' debut work "Jawaani Ki Hawa", a heart-touching scene depicts the love affair between Devika Rani and Najam-ul-Hassan.

Jeevan Naiya (1936)

Their on-screen chemistry blossomed over time again in "Jeevan Naiya" (1936), but their off-screen love, forced them to quietly elope from Kolkata.  And There was a dark shadow looming among their love story and their happiness. Actually, Devika Rani was already married to Bombay Talkies, co-founder of Himanshu Rai. The whispers of Devika's departure, spread in the air.

Himanshu Rai confided with Sashadhan Mukherjee and they both searched for her far and wide until he traced the eloping couple. Divorce was an unthinkable idea in those days, and so Mukherjee's inspiring words, ultimately convinced Devika Rani to go back to her husband. But Himanshu, confronted with Hasan's dismissal and threw Hasan out of his job.

Naturally Hassan returned like a lost lover. The interesting factor was that, Rai himself had once encouraged and helped Hassan to pursue his profession in acting. Traumatized by the loss of his wife to a handsome man, Rai decided on Kumudlal Kunjilal Ganguly, a humble assistant from his studio, to play the hero in Bombay Talkies' future films. Whose name was changed to Ashok Kumar as according to the public's liking. Regardless of all people within the studio having doubts about Ashok Kumar's suitability as a hero, Rai saw potential in Ashok Kumar's simple looks and thus superb actor Ashok Kumar emerged in the film industry as a super star.
