Sandhya Suri’s Film ‘Santosh’: A disappointing update has emerged regarding the release of British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri’s film Santosh. The film, which was officially selected as the UK’s entry for the Oscars and had made it to the shortlist, was set to release in India. However, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has imposed a ban on its release.
CBFC Blocks Sandhya Suri’s Santosh Over Content Issues
British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri’s film, Santosh, which was sent as the UK’s official entry to the Oscars and even shortlisted, was slated to release in India. But now, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has blocked its release. The board claims that the film portrays misogyny, Islamophobia, and police violence, which could have a negative impact on society. According to media reports, the CBFC has demanded multiple cuts in the film related to the police force and various social issues before allowing its release.
Director Sandhya Suri Reacts
On the CBFC’s decision, the film’s writer and director, Sandhya Suri, called the board’s decision “disappointing” and “heartbreaking.” In a statement, she said, "It was a surprising decision for all of us because I didn’t feel that the issues depicted in the film were new to Indian cinema or hadn’t been raised before by other films.” She further mentioned that the list of cuts demanded by the CBFC was impossible to implement. “It was very important for me that the film releases in India. I don’t think my film glorifies violence. There’s nothing sensational about it. This film shows another side of the country, but in it, there is humanity in everyone.”
Actress Shahana Goswami Speaks Out
Actress Shahana Goswami, who plays the lead role in the film, also expressed her concerns. She said, “The censor board has provided a list of essential changes required for the film's release, but our entire team disagrees with these suggestions. They want to make extensive changes to the film, and as a result, it might not release in Indian theaters. It’s truly saddening that a film, which was approved at the script level by the censor board, now requires so many cuts and changes for its release in India.”
What’s the Story About?
Set in rural North India, the film tells the story of a woman who, after the death of her husband, is recruited into the police force. She is assigned a case involving the murder of a Dalit girl. As the investigation unfolds, the story delves into whether the case is solved and what truths come to light. Sandhya Suri’s film tackles sensitive issues such as caste discrimination and sexual violence.
In this rural North Indian setting, Shahana Goswami plays the lead role of Santosh Saini. The film also features Sunita Rajwar, Sanjay Bishnoi, Kushal Dubey, Naval Shukla, and Pratibha Awasthi in important roles.
Recognition at International Festivals
It is noteworthy that Santosh had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where it received critical acclaim. Following that, it was nominated for Best Debut Feature at the BAFTA awards. Actress Shahana Goswami was also awarded Best Actress at the Asian Film Awards for her performance in the film.
